Mission Statement

Free a Girl rescues minor girls from sexual exploitation. Free a Girl is dedicated to fight sexual exploitation of children. So far, we have rescued more than 7.400 minor girls worldwide. As well as rescues, we focus on prevention, tackling impunity, lobbying and advocacy, and rehabilitating and reintegrating the girls. Free a Girl works with fourteen partner organisations in Bangladesh, Brazil, China, India, Laos, Nepal, the Netherlands, and Thailand.

About This Cause

Free a Girl fights the sexual exploitation of children. We strive for a world free of sexual exploitation of children. Every child has the right to grow up in a safe environment. All children around the world must be protected against every form of exploitation. Free a Girl supports the rescue and rehabilitation of victims of sexual exploitation and provides them with access to education, vocational training, medical care, and trauma counselling. - Rescues: Free a Girl supports professional organisations that rescue girls from sexual exploitation in various countries. The organisations investigate where minor girls are being held, and then raid the premises with the police. They literally break down the doors. As the problem takes different forms in different countries, every country requires a separate approach. Minor girls in India are often imprisoned in brothels, for example, whereas girls in Nepal tend to be held in dance bars. - Rehabilitation and reintegration: all of the rescued girls are traumatised. Most have contracted STDs and tragically many are found to be HIV +. In one of our shelters or a government shelter, they are given medical care and trauma counseling. They also attend school, where they are guided towards a better future. After the girls have been rescued from sexual exploitation, stigma can prevent them from returning home. Work is their path to freedom, but finding and keeping a job is a major challenge for this vulnerable group. That’s why we provide vocational training and internships. In their internships the girls learn to work in a commercial environment and can learn to save money to set up their own businesses in the future. Many have gained practical work experience and have found jobs in the catering trade. - Tackling impunity: one of the main reasons why sexual exploitation of children continues to exist is impunity. The perpetrators tend to evade prosecution, often aided by corrupt local officials. Victims often fail to report crimes, sometimes for fear of revenge, or are let down by the legal system if they choose to seek help. As a result, the perpetrators escape punishment, the victims don’t get justice, and society gets the impression that it’s possible to get away with sexual exploitation as an acceptable and profitable business. Together with our local partner organisations, Free a Girl is working hard to tackle impunity. That’s why we have set up the School for Justice. - Prevention: in addition to rescuing young girls from brothels we are actively involved in prosecuting perpetrators, fighting the impunity behind which these perpetrators are shielded, providing logistical assistance and information in rural areas and monitoring for human trafficking at border crossings. All of these activities have a preventive effect and save many lives before they are ensnared in the terrible world of sex slavery. - Lobby & advocacy: we use lobbying and advocacy to fight the sexual exploitation of girls and improve their economic prospects. Our lobbying and advocacy mainly focuses on awareness-raising campaigns.
