Mission Statement

NeuroMove is a non-profit training center that aims to improve the physical functionality and quality of life of spinal cord injury patients using Activity Based Therapy (ABT). This is a unique concept in Europe but it has successfully been applied in the USA for over 20 years. Founders Katelijne and Lars, experiental experts, want to give other Dutch patients the same chance of recovery as they had in the US, by founding an ABT-center in Amsterdam. All and any donations make a major difference since NeuroMove is just starting up. Help us to give SCI-patients a more independent and healthier future!

About This Cause

NeuroMove offers Activity Based Therapy to spinal cord injury patients. This is a safe and non-invasive method. The physical therapists focus on stimulating neurological recovery below the level of injury to regain physical functionality and mobility. Being able to independently turn around in bed, to eat, to get dressed, to sit upright, to regain your sexuality or to walk again makes a significant difference in the life of a patient. This obviously leads to a more independent life, greater well-being and a hopeful future! Alongside neurological recovery, more than 20 scientific studies have also proved that this method has a lot of health benefits for patients and decreases the risk of complications. ‘But isn’t that already standard practice in spinal cord injury rehabilitation?’, we hear you think. The answer is no. Functional recovery from paralysis was generally believed to be nearly impossible, based on traditional expert opinion, and the priority was to develop compensation strategies to achieve functional goals in the home and community. During the past two decades research has shown that the nervous system, whether intact or injured, has enormous potential for adaptation and modification, which can be harnessed to facilitate recovery. These findings have given rise to Activity Based Therapies. Because of the positive results, ABT-centers have been shooting up like mushrooms all over the US in the past 10 years. Unfortunately, this is not the case in Europe and NeuroMove wants to change that. NeuroMove founders Katelijne and Lars both sustained a spinal cord injury in 2015. In the rehabilitation center they were taught ‘how to live in a wheelchair’. There was no focus on neurological recovery. They both moved to the US where they trained at several ABT-centers. With great results! Katelijne, who was paralyzed from the waist down, regained sensation in her bladder and has taken her first unaided steps behind a walker. And Lars, paralyzed from the neck down, can now sit upright, keeping his balance, and regained enough strength in his legs to be able to make (aided) standing transfers after only 5 months of training. By founding NeuroMove they want to give others the same chance of recovery. NeuroMove is a social enterprise that is financially sustainable. The main revenue source is insurance policy coverage. Because SCI rehabilitation in general and the ABT training method in specific require specialised equipment and because the training course for the ABT method is quite costly, NeuroMove needs a relatively large startup investment. However, insurance companies don’t take these large investments into account when setting their coverage rates. We therefore focus on a combination of crowdfunding, donations, social investments, subsidies and funding to make NeuroMove a reality. NeuroMove was awarded the ANBI status, which allows for donations to be tax deductible for the donator.
