About This Cause
NO CHILD SHOULD GROW UP ALONE The kids are the engine of advancement, creativity, and positive change in a world that is constantly changing and interconnected. Alas! Currently in Nigeria, there are 18.5 million out-of-school children and on the street, 60% of whom are girls," Rahama Farah, the head of the UNICEF office in Kano, told reporters, March, 2024.The numerous attacks on schools by jihadists and criminal gangs in the north have particularly harmed children's education, Farah said. A lot of these children ran to the southern part of the country because they felt it is safer. They are on the street for survival, they face neglect abuse and exploitations. They were running away from violence, got to the street and are facing terrible forms of violence. They are the ones always recruited to be bandit, kidnappers and terrorists. It is a problem that attention must be paid to. If we fail to attend to the matter of street children now, issue of insecurity will continue to be aggravated in Nigeria and the whole of Africa. WIDC Street-Smart Education Initiative (SSEI) is a multifaceted program designed to provide street children with access to education, essential life skills, and support services to help them break the cycle of poverty and vulnerability. By combining educational interventions with social support and community engagement, SSEI aims to empower street children to realize their full potential and reintegrate into society. Key Features: Mobile Learning Units: Establish mobile learning units equipped with educational materials, including books, tablets, and learning games, to bring education directly to street children in their communities. These units can be stationed at strategic locations frequented by street children or operated from mobile vans to reach different areas Flexible Learning Programs: Offer flexible and non-traditional learning programs tailored to the needs and circumstances of street children, including informal education sessions, remedial classes, vocational training, and life skills workshops. Child-Friendly Spaces: Create safe and supportive spaces where street children can access education, receive meals, receive healthcare services, and participate in recreational activities. These spaces should be welcoming and inclusive, free from discrimination and exploitation. Peer Mentoring and Counseling: Recruit and train peer mentors and social workers from within the street community to provide mentorship, guidance, and psychosocial support to street children. Foster positive relationships and a sense of belonging among participants, helping them develop resilience and self-confidence. Family Reintegration Support: Work with families, caregivers, and guardians to facilitate the reintegration of street children into stable and supportive home environments whenever possible. Provide family counseling, livelihood support, and economic empowerment initiatives to address underlying factors contributing to child homelessness. Community Outreach and Advocacy: Engage with local communities, government agencies, NGOs, and other stakeholders to raise awareness about the rights and needs of street children and advocate for policies and programs that promote their well-being and protection. Monitoring and Evaluation: Implement rigorous monitoring and evaluation systems to assess the impact of SSEI, track participant progress, and identify areas for improvement. Collect qualitative and quantitative data to measure educational outcomes, psychosocial development, and long-term
