About This Cause

Who We Are? Women’s Health, Empowerment and Peace Initiative (WOHEPI) is a Non- Governmental, Not- for-profit and non-political organization was founded in 2018 as an affiliate of Federation of Female Nurses and Midwives (FENAM) and became incorporated in March 2020 with Corporate Affairs Commission registration CAC/IT/No. 145700. Vision Women’s Health, Empowerment and Peace Initiative (WOHEPI) envision a society where women, youths and children are empowered to live healthy, productive and peaceful. Objectives 1. To raise the consciousness of women, children, youth, on health issues (communicable and non-communicable diseases/ reproductive health issues) through advocacy, social mobilization, sensitization and training to enable them respond to their health needs. 2. To promote maternal and child health programs aimed at reducing maternal and child morbidity and mortality rates. 3. To implement programs that would promote the capacities and empowerment of women and youths that will lift them out of poverty. 4. To initiate and execute programs aimed at campaigning against, gender base violence (GBV) child labor and elimination of harmful traditional practices against women 5. To model peace making values, skills and methods of conflicts resolution and gender violence prevention among women and youths. 6. To promote the development of interpersonal skills for handling relationships and conflicts constructively. 7. To initiate and execute programs aimed at promoting WASH activities among women at community level. 8. To collaborate and network with non-governmental organization, development partners, government and individuals in pursuit of its mandate. This is because we recognize the link between our expertise and other sectors. Our approach to work is based on five key principles: experience, professionalism, quality service and value for money. As a people-centered organization, we work hard at relationships with our partners as well as our stakeholders. We recognize the importance of inclusion and participation and this allows us to balance all interests between our partnerships with clients, consultants, stakeholders and the communities we work in. Strategies The organizational strategies are as follows: i. Training for capacity building ii. Advocacy, community sensitization and mobilization iii. Networking, partnership and collaborating iv. Needs based intervention v. Performance based Thematic Areas We are particularly interested in working in the following thematic areas because of our past track records and the renewed interest as it concerns the targeted population, which has been the primary focus of our organization. The areas are of key institutional and programmatic relevance to the vision and mission of WOHEPI. The key thematic areas of interest are: 1. Health and Nutrition 2. Gender Based Violence 3. Environment, Water, Sanitation and Hygiene 4. Education, Peace and Conflict Resolution Programs and Projects 1. Community mobilization for awareness creation, education and sensitization using the following strategies: Outreaches, Minimum Prevention Package Intervention (MPPI), Interpersonal Communication (IPC), and Focus Group Discussions (FGD). 2. Campaign against gender base violence (GBV), child labor and elimination of harmful traditional practices against women. 3. Sustain Maternal and Child health programs: aimed at reducing maternal and child morbidity and mortality rates through PMTCT programs, distribution of VIT A, community deworming activities and playing active role during Maternal, Neonatal and Child Health (MNCH) week. 4. Conduction of peace and conflict resolution programs 5. Women and youth empowerment and skills acquisition programs and project. 6. Water, sanitation and hygiene promotion programs. 7. Capacity Building of members to enable them responds to the training needs of women and youth in programs and project related programs. 8. Networking in collaboration and partnership with non-governmental organization, development partners, government and individuals in pursuit of set goals. Current and Past Experiences on project implementation WOHEPI from inception has implemented many projects that have made her gained a robust experience in the development work over the years. 1. Health WOHEPI is currently partnering with Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN) and other organization in mobilizing and creating awareness among women and girls for free cervical cancer screening. The exercise is held every first Tuesday of the month. The project is for 1 year (January -December 2021). Achievement to date shows 220 have been screened of which 19 were found positive. These have been treated accordingly. 2. Ongoing TB sensitization and education project. The purpose of the project is to create awareness and educate community members on TB and its preventive measures to reduces the spread of TB cases at the community level through contacts tracing and identification of presumptive cases for early diagnosis and treatment. Home visits are conducted on DRTB clients to ascertain their levels compliance to treatment and living conditions in 3 LGAs. The Association for Reproductive and Health (ARFH) supports this project. 3. Youth Program A 3 months adolescent toolkit project was piloted in Gboko LGA. The project is implemented through NYANTHA and supported by UNICEF. The purpose was to leverage on the existing structures to support the establishment and strengthening of adolescent participation platforms at community level. Duration of the polit project was January to March 2021 4. Partnership and collaboration: In 2020 WOHEPI partnered with NEWSAN, BENSACA, Soropitimist Women international, National Human Rights to commemorates World special days like World Gender Based Violence, While in the first quarter of 2021 we have collaborated with BENGONET a network of organizations, MWAN and SMOH, State TB and Leprosy Program to commemorates World Cancer Day, International Women’s Day and World TB Day respectively. 5. Skill Acquisition Empowerment Project: A total of 30 Women and girls were trained in various skills ranging from soap making, baking, beats making and making of Vaseline and hair creams in Vandeikya and Guma LGA. Project was supported by UN Women. 6. Awareness Creation and sensitization on COVID-19. Over 1000 persons were reached with COVID 19 messages. Other activities done were distribution of IEC materials. Palliatives were also distributed among women, girls and men care givers to cushion the effect of COVID-19 in two council wards of Vandeikya LGA in May – October 2020, Ushongo town 29th June 2020 and two council wards of Makurdi LGA in February 2021. 7. Training of in -school girls on Menstrual Hygiene Management: The purpose was to promote menstrual hygiene management practices among women and school girls. The training incorporated making and sawing of reusable pads etc. this has been done in 4 secondary schools and at the community level in 4 LGAs. A total of 600 women and girls were reached with MHM messages and skills to produce reusable pads. The activity was self - support. 8. Peace and Conflict Resolution program: A negotiation and a peace mediation intervention meeting was held on the 4th March 2021. In Makurdi. The purpose was to douse the tension between famers and herder among border communities between Guma LGA and Nasarrawa State. The meeting was very successfully sand was supported by Interfaith Mediation Commission, Kaduna. Organizational Structure and Capacity Governing Structure At the apex governing structure of the organization is the Board of Trustee (BOT) made up of 5 Members headed by a Chairperson. Under the BOT is the Executive Director and 3 management staff which are: program officer, M&E officer and a financial officer; including over 30 volunteers that assist to perform assignments. Thus, our worth of experiences and capabilities can never be over emphasized. In term of physical resources the organization has computers, furniture etc. It also has functional office accommodations in Makurdi and Vandeikya Town. Sources of Funding WOHEPI generates its funds through external and internal sources: Proposal writing, donations, individuals, collaborations and partnerships.
