About This Cause

JOIN good forces is a Norwegian Christian humanitarian foundation established in 1993. JOIN good forces is an efficient organization and have strong local presence through partnership with local churches, governments, organizations and individuals. JOIN good forces is working in post-war areas and has a special focus on woman and child health, peace-building, and violence prevention. We have conducted a number of projects in high-risk areas in East Congo where few others can work. We achieve fast and good results with a high degree of sustainability. Today JOIN work in DR Congo, Kenya and South Sudan. Our work in DR Congo: JOIN started working in eastern Congo in 1994 when refugees from Rwanda poured into the small town of Goma in DR Congo. JOINs fieldworkers started to give help to refugees and also established an orphanage together with Mama Jeanne for children who had fled from an orphanage in Kigali. JOIN established the local organization Hope in Action. Today HiA is our main partner in DR Congo. JOIN also work with: • demobilization and reintegration of guerrilla soldiers and child soldiers • operation of health centres, hospitals and reception centres that are specialized in treating rape victims. Local health workers are trained in medical and trauma treatment. • follow-up of raped women who can not be returned to their families, building of women’s collectives, and vocational training for women. • violence prevention through courses for men in witch they are made aware of their disposition to use violence against women and children. Violence against women and children Rape has become a weapon used against the enemy’s women and children. Each year an estimated 400,000 women and children are raped in Congo, according to UN statistic. Victims tell of mass rape and the use of rifle barrels that brutally destroys the lives of women and children. Through a woman-to-woman network in the North Kivu province, we reach remote villages behind the front lines where women and children are attacked. Special field centres ("listening-houses") and women centres provide protection and care for these women. Those who are severely injured are transported to hospitals in Goma, where they receive medical attention. Mama Jeanne and Mama Jeannette JOINs fieldworkers in eastern Congo are led by two extraordinary women, Mama Jeanne and Mama Jeannette. They organize the centres for the raped women. In addition, Mama Jeanne runs an orphanage with 300 children. Working with them are 45 female coaches who enters into areas where few people dare to go, to reach women in need. Through cooperation with Norwegian trauma experts we give training courses for the coaches so that they can give the best help to the victims. In 2015 Mama Jeanne and Mama Jeannette was nominated to Nobel Peace Prize together with Dr Denis Mukwege. Women’s Houses Raped women are stigmatized and often excluded in the DR Congo. In order to give these women a new start, we buy land, build a small house and give them implements for farming and a start-up kit. Hospitals In 2010 we began the construction of a special hospital for women and children in Goma. This is a specialist hospital for rape victims and patients who need fistula operations. The hospital can accommodate 250 patients. In addition, we began construction of a new pavilion at the Heal Africa Hospital. The hospitals have increased the operating capacity in North Kivu significantly. Both hospitals were opened in 2012 - at the same time the guerrilla army M23 captured Goma. JOIN are also responsible for the construction of the women's clinic at Panzi Hospital where Dr. Mukwege is the Director. An extensive training program for doctors at Panzi Hospital and at Kyeshero Hospital is also financed through JOIN.
