About This Cause
In 1988, The Kanlungan sa ER-MA Ministry, Inc. (KSEM) was established in response to the growing menace of abuse and exploitation of street children in Metro Manila. “Kanlungan” means sanctuary or refuge, while ERMA stands for Ermita-Malate, the former “red light district” of the capital where Kanlungan started its work. It is a refuge for street children, the exploited, neglected, the abused and abandoned, the orphaned children, as well as the victims of child trafficking. For the last thirty-three years, Kanlungan has reached out to these children who have been considered by society as “eye sores”. Kanlungan sa Er-Ma’s believes that every child is a precious gift from God and that his or her nurture and total development must be the concern of the society. It also believes that teamwork, integrity, respect, open communication, accountability, trust and excellence are other core values to pursue in fulfilling its mission. The Kanlungan team also believes that through unceasing prayers, hard work, regular fellowship of the staff, children and Board, good relationship with donors, partners, friends and volunteers and whole-hearted dedication to its mission, the goals can be achieved effectively.
