Mission Statement

ChildHope Asia Philippines is a not-for profit, non-government organization working to promote the welfare of street children in the Philippines and the Asia region. It works toward the liberation of the child from the suffering caused by working and living on the street. ChildHope was founded in 1986 by individuals from children’s agencies who saw the need for an international effort specifically on behalf of street children. Its Board of Directors included representatives from international children’s agencies and individuals who work directly with street children. ChildHope Regional Office for Asia was established in July 1989 after the First Regional Conference of Street Children in Asia held in Manila in May of the same year. In 1995, ChildHope officially became ChildHope Asia Philippines, Inc. as registered under the Securities and Exchange Commission.

About This Cause

Childhope’s main program is the Outreach and Protection/Education on the Streets which provides counseling and non-formal education among street children in 20 areas in Metro Manila through our 31 Street Educators. Our Street Educators, either social workers or teachers, provide the street children with direct access to basic social services. These include counseling, alternative basic education, basic literacy and numeracy, health care, recreation, legal protection and referral services. Street educators are frontline/outreach field workers and role models who facilitate sessions among street children on values education, life skills and life goals, child rights and responsibilities, the effects of drug abuse, protection from sexual abuse, primary health care, reproductive health, financial education, vocational skills training and many others; as well as to arrange for the immediate provision of health services and nutrition education. They conduct sessions five days a week (Tuesdays to Saturdays, 4:00pm to 9:00pm) among the street children to facilitate their protection, education, and eventual decision to seek temporary shelter, or to return to their families or relatives, whenever feasible. One integral component of the Street Education Program is the Mobile Education Van (MEV) which provides opportunities for street children to learn in a very creative and interactive way. Childhope has two (2) MEVs which aim to improve and provide more creative and comprehensive means to facilitate the provision of basic and alternative education on the streets using more inspired educational and recreational materials, tools and equipments, such as Educational TV, books and tapes, etc. Another major component of the Street Education Program is the Mobile Health Clinic (MHC) which provides the street children with medical services on the streets in the poorest areas of Greater Manila once a week. The MHC is managed by a full-time Medical Doctor who is assisted by the street children trained as Junior Health Workers (JHWs). The Mobile Education Vans (MEVs) and the Mobile Health Clinic (MHC) have been instrumental in helping the street children of Metro Manila to have direct access to health/ medical care and alternative learning and basic education. Aside from these components, Childhope also provides the following services among the street children as part of the Outreach and Protection/Education on the Streets Program: 1. Conduct of Alternative Education Sessions 2. Alternative Learning System (ALS) 3. Health/Medical services for street children through the MHC and MHC Doctor 4. Psychosocial Interventions 5. Financial Education Program and Vocational/Technical Skills Training 6. Skills Development 7. Development of leadership and organizational capabilities among street children, training and development of Junior Advocates, Junior Health Workers among the street children. 8. Educational Assistance Program Aside from the abovementioned activities, Childhope also engages in advocacy and networking initiatives which include the following activities: • Courtesy calls to and coordination with the police, barangay officials, health centers/ hospitals, government/ non-government agencies, and other organizations especially those operating within Childhope’s areas of operation including religious and business groups; • Provision/distribution of advocacy/IEC materials; • Orientation/training/street exposure among potential and existing volunteers; • Participation in meetings organized by Childhope and/or other government/non-government organizations and networks; and • Inventory of the existing programs/services and other resources for street children in the area. Thus, we will greatly appreciate financial assistance that will help us to ensure the continued and more effective and efficient implementation of our programs and services. Childhope also welcomes volunteers who are willing to share their time, talents and skills with the children as well as with the organization.
