Mission Statement
Rak’N’Roll is a charity organization with a mission to change the way society thinks about cancer and to improve the quality of life for patients. We want to pass our enthusiasm on to other cancer patients. Other campaigns by Rak’n’Roll include the renovation of oncological waiting rooms in order to make them more patient-friendly, and the promotion of full term pregnancies among women with cancer. The lifelong inspiration for our actions is our late founder, Magdalena Prokopowicz. During her illness, Magda got married, gave birth to a boy and always encouraged everybody to keep their heads up. About This Cause
Our Projects: 1. Star Calendar– first project by Rak’n’Roll - Women with cancer portrayed as rock/pop stars from the covers of known music albums. 2. Divine Mothers - Divine Mothers album was published by Rak’n’Roll in 2011. The album is about women who decided to fight for their pregnancies while struggling with cancer. They won twice as much life - they gave birth to healthy babies. They became icons and a shining example to others in similar situations. 3. Give hair! - This project is our biggest success. Healthy women donate their own hair to women undergoing chemotherapy. The scale is huge: over 100 hair saloons are involved not only in Poland but in London and New York. Hundreds of ponytails and braids which have been cut in order to prepare free wigs for women in need. This is an ongoing project with new people joining in every day. 4. Bald and beautiful - The idea of this project is to convince people that women who lost their hair due to chemotherapy can still look beautiful and very feminine. Rak’n’Roll invited many talented photographers who shot women in settings that brought out their natural beauty. The photos were exhibited in theatres in Warsaw. 5. Rak’n’Roll Records - Rak’n’Roll proudly presents the creation of the first charitable music label. This innovatory project received many creative awards in the ad industry, two Clio awards in New York amongst them. For us, this is a new platform to raise funds for the Foundation. 6. Collecting money for tits, new hairdos and drugs - This campaign encourages people to donate 1% from their yearly income tax to our Foundation. With these funds we can continue to support people during their illness as well as projects that raise awareness and educate. This campaign was widely publicised in the media and was awarded the best charity campaign in 2012. It received many other awards as well. 7. Talk. Test - This is the Foundation’s first social campaign directed at men, to raise awareness about prostate cancer prevention. Because it is not easy to talk to men about cancer, direct and provocative words were used to reach this audience. 8. Rak’n’Rolling - Rak’n’Rolling to the Tropic of Cancer was the event of the year in 2012. Participants rode their bikes to the Tropic of Cancer in Africa. Six oncological patients in the Foundation’s care, accompanied by experienced bikers, rode over 5000 km. This was a start to a program which tries to encourage patients to physical activity. This project was awarded Traveler 2012 by National Geographic. 9. Beauty workshops - For the past years our Foundation has been organising beauty workshops for women who are undergoing or have just finished chemotherapy. It all started in 2011. To date ,we were able to organise workshops in 19 cities in Poland. Over 300 women were given expert advice. We also organised workshops in London. During such workshops, women were able to learn more about the right make-up, what to do with their nails, how to choose the right wig or even lingerie. 10. Patient waiting areas in oncology clinics - In Poland, waiting areas for patients in hospitals are usually old, and grey as well as depressing and extremely crowded. That is precisely why our Foundation has been struggling from the start to obtain funds to renovate those areas and make them more patient friendly. After many years, on October 24th, 2013, we opened a newly refurbished waiting area in the biggest oncology clinic in Warsaw. Up until now, we were able to renovate waiting areas in many cities across Poland. 11. Photos for Life - „Photos for Life” is the first charity photo bank in the world. People struggling with cancer or those that have won the battle, allowed us to use their photos for commercial purposes. They did this to share their positive energy with others and to give hope that we can all beat cancer. All proceeds from the photos go to our Foundation.
