About This Cause

SLONKO Foundation has been formally operating since May 2019, but its history dates back much earlier. Spontaneous aid campaigns began to be organized when the founders of the SLONKO Foundation experienced illness and anti-cancer therapy. Former patients, during many hours-long hospital visits, found out about the problems and needs of their colleagues from therapy and decided to help immediately just like they could at that moment. Other people began to be involved in helping, and so a group of people willing to help, but also in need of support, began to increase. It was 2013. It started with a Christmas tree. A Christmas tree that was placed in the waiting room for patients taking chemotherapy. Then clothes for the patient's child - because she was in a difficult financial situation. Then financial assistance in the purchase of medicines, assistance in financing taking home after chemotherapy for a very elderly, lonely patient who had to travel to the hospital by several means of transport. So since there were people willing to help, there were patients who needed support and there was inspiration from Dr. Aleksandra Łacko (working in DCOPiH - Lower Silesian Center of Oncology, Pulmonology and Hematology) who knew her patients and their life problems very well, which usually during the illness grow, and even more the strength to overcome them is really small, then a person was needed who would make a decision and organize activities that would result in a legal form entity ready for wider cooperation. Consequently Joanna Cieslik-Smela - an IT specialist and entrepreneur, together with her friends: Edyta Pisarska, Anna Kolbuszewska, Joanna Mleczak, Magdalena Terlecka, Hanna Suchowierska and Renata Brajer-Marczak, have established the SLONKO Foundation. The year 2022 has brought many changes: expected, less awaited and even undesirable. When thousands of Ukrainian refugees suddenly have appeared, mainly mothers with children, who would come to Poland in the middle of winter, the SLONKO Foundation, together with friends, organized a place for 30 people in Wrocław-Ołtaszyn during one weekend. A full description of activities is communicated on the facebook group https://www.facebook.com/groups/377886440422123/ . Today, 11 people still live in this place. Other families have returned to Ukraine - 4 families from the town of Chmienicki. Some went to Canada, Israel, Austria, Germany and Belgium. On a daily basis the SLONKO Foundation operates without an office and without employees. It is based solely on the social work of the founders and members of the foundation's council, supported by their families and friends, who do it voluntarily as a part of their free time. The Foundation does not generate fixed costs, apart from the cost of the phone and website. No one receives any remuneration, except for services that must be outsourced to authorized professionals such as: the costs of construction work, website maintenance, accountancy, transport of large size items, e.g. furniture.
