Mission Statement

Project background: Russia's invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022 caused a mass exodus of Ukrainians. Within 25 days, more than 2 million refugees arrived in Poland. According to the UN, this is the fastest exodus of refugees in this century. Poland, so far with practically no refugee experience, became overnight one of the countries with one of the largest numbers of refugees in the world. For Poland, such a large group of refugees arriving in a very short space of time is an extreme challenge. In these conditions, together with the support from central and municipal governments it is very important to mobilise local communities, NGOs, grassroots organizations to support refugee population whose large portion constitute children. Krakow is one of the largest recipient of refugee population in Poland alongside with Warsaw. According to various estimates over 200,000 refugees are now living in Krakow. This has increased city population by over 20%. While the municipality of Krakow has included refugee support in all its current programmes, the unmet needs are still vast, especially when it comes to the youngest children. Goal of the project: Based on socio-emotional, developmental and health needs of Ukrainian refugee children in Poland, the goal of the project is to provide emotional support to Ukrainian refugee young children and their mothers and to assist in their initial adaptation to new conditions. Specific objectives : - Ensuring a sense of security, preventing alienation and reducing the consequences of the dramatic experiences of children under 7 years old through participation in playgroups, adaptation and cultural activities - Helping parents and caregivers provide the needed security and support to their young children - Supporting preschool teachers and other personnel working with young children to find effective ways of integrating children in the Polish society while maintaining their cultural identity. Beneficiaries: The project will directly benefit up to 6,000 Ukrainian refugee children living in Krakow and the region of south Poland. The project will also benefit up to 2,000 parents and caregivers. Over 10,000 preschool teachers and other professionals working with young children will receive training, capacity-building and access to high-quality materials

About This Cause

About the Day Care initiative: Day Care Krakow is a place created by parents for parents in need. We created an initiative of a temporary kindergarten in response to a wave of refugees who need to be provided with childcare to enable them to arrange various formalities connected to their stay in Poland, looking for a place to stay or searching for work. During the first 10 days after the war outbreak we ourselves gathered an amount of money sufficient to run the facility for around two months, we brought the necessary personnel together, found a place for free, bought all the necessary equipment, created social media profiles, set up a website available in three languages. During those first 10 days we also accepted first group of 100 children (50 additional kids signed in on a reserve list). During the week following that initial period we developed a curriculum and psychological support program for the children and their mothers. We also opened a publishing house that publishes free booklets with information about legal assistance and psychological aid in Ukrainian and Polish, available in both digital and paper versions. Two weeks later we established a foundation which main goal is to support education of children and teenagers, equal access to education, development of skills useful for appropriate social adjustment, organizing various workshops and other initiatives related to various forms of not only art but also artistic, cultural and ecological education and initiatives positively impacting the social cohesion. Long-term plans: In our immediate reaction to the need of childcare for preschool kids since the first half of March we run various initiatives as part of ‘Day Care Krakow. Big Center of Little Meetings’. Thanks to funds gathered through donations we already have all the necessary equipment, premises and exceptional personnel that looks after the whole 100 of our pupils and provides them with the highest level of development. After the first month we decided to keep helping the children to expand their Ukrainian language skills, their national identity and learn about tradition. We realize that the sense of security is vital for the social and emotional development for the kids. We do our best to show that Krakow can provide not only a hospitable and safe but also an inspiring living space. There are plans to run Polish as a foreign language classes in the kindergarten, leaving the Ukrainian as the main language for daily communication with the teachers and peers. The foundation plans to cooperate with other NGO’s, municipal and cultural institutions and local leaders and artists. The project is planned to be temporary. Day Care Krakow looks to provide a continuity of education in Ukrainian system.
