Mission Statement

For 30 years already we work that young people enjoy their lives, at full potential and good health. We know that developing responsible attitudes and behaviours need constant and consistent efforts, evidence-based data, but also some fun. We involve adolescents and young people in the programmes since framing the needs and finding the good ideas, up to the implementation. We are here to help young people to be better educated, healthier and more conscious about themselves. Our mission is: - Promoting universal access of adolescents and young people to quality health education and services, focusing on sexual reproductive health and rights - Improving the quality of young people’s life through their active involvement and participation in SRHR programmes for 15-24 years old - Advocating for the rights of children and adolescents at national and international level

About This Cause

Youth for Youth Foundation Romania is a national, non-governmental, independent, non-political, nonprofit and voluntary based association founded in 1991 aimed at tackling social issues of Romanian youth. We believe in prevention, in peer education and non-formal education. Our priorities are youth, personal responsibility and performance and the main way to reach young people is peer education. Youth for Youth uses this approach since 1993, being recognized at national and international level (through the Youth Peer network). As a young national organization from South-Eastern Europe addressing issues considered „sensitive”, we needed to develop a very strong internal philosophy of work. We believe in perseverance, as we know that change needs effort and determination. We believe in fairness and we respectfully work with our partners, no matter the context. We believe in standards and for us, the process is as important as the result. And yes, the most important value is that we believe in people! Our work, in short description: - We work with volunteers - adolescents and young people that want more than to be informed, but to share knowledge and educate their peers. - Together with our partners, mainly the institutions that support the health education programmes, from ministries (Ministry of Education, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Labor and Social Justice) to school inspectorates, schools and counselling centres. We involve central and local authorities. We work together with the donors and organizations that provide us with the necessary resources. - For all beneficiaries - adolescents enrolled in the public educational system, that need information, but don’t know whom and when to ask. For young people that do not ask anymore, as are convinced they already know it all. For teachers and school counsellors that need tools and methods to better work and communicate with their students. We love it when our work is recognized, especially as we have continuously developed and implemented quality projects, even in difficult times and sometimes with lots of challenges: - 2023 – 2nd Prize – category „Good youth” at the Civil Society Awards for the project of the initiative group „Intimisfera – immersive exhibition in sexuality” - 2014 - 1st Prize - Best Educational Project / Structural Funds Gala – „Life Skills and Individual Responsibility Education through Active Citizenship programmes for Romanian Youth” – European Social Fund / ID: 56656 - 2012 – 1st Prize - Best Educational Project / Volunteering Awards – „Life Skills and Individual Responsibility Education through Active Citizenship programmes for Romanian Youth” – European Social Fund / ID: 56656 - 2011 – 1st Prize - Best Health Project/Volunteering Awards – „Comprehensive approaches in HIV prevention in Romania” – EEA Grants - 2011 – 1st Prize – Best project addressing Youth / Civil Society Awards – „Comprehensive approaches in HIV prevention in Romania” – EEA Grants - 2010 – 1st Prize – Best project in the field of Education and Research / Civil Society Awards – „Increasing access to sexual and reproductive health education and youth-friendly services” – UNFPA ROU1R205 - 2009 – Health Excellency Prize / ”Carol Davila” Awards Ceremony – „STI/HIV/AIDS prevention through behaviour change communication programmes” – Global Fund to fight AIDS, TB and Malaria H17O1A1 We are known especially in schools, as our beneficiaries are there. And mostly we are known by those that come into direct contact with us. Below we are describing our main educational programmes, implemented also under the 3-years Protocol no. 18350/ 14.10.2024 signed with the National Public Health Institute. The programme at the basis of the prevention interventions among adolescents, first realized in 1993 with USAID support, is called „Family Life Education” (understanding the diversity of families), implemented under the message „Dare to Grow (Up)/ Îndrăznește să fii mare!”. It is addressed to adolescents and young people, covering the main topics of interest according to age, concentrating on sexual and reproductive health education and rights for the high-school level (14+ yo). The programme was considered a best practice model by the United Nations system (UNFPA, as partner and donor since 1996 until 2009) for the Central and South-Eastern Region in Europe, thus providing technical assistance in the beginning of the years 2000 to Bulgaria and Moldavia. We were one of the partners of the Ministry of Education in the development and implementation of the National Programme for Health Education in Romanian Schools, launched in 2001. We contributed since its beginning to the theme of „reproductive health and family” within the health education optional modular curricula, approved through Minister of Education order no. 4496/2004. The programme for adolescents is comprehensive, covering the national, european and international recommendations and guidelines (the Standard Guidelines developed and revised by UNESCO, the report of the European Parliament on sexual and reproductive health rights etc.). The educational programme in school is developed through 6-12 consequent hours/ high-school class, being delivered by trained peer-educators, with signed agreements from schools and the parents. Themes have a logical process, to reach personal and social responsibility: Self-knowledge and Communication, Communication About Sexuality, Reproductive System: Anatomy and Physiology, Values and Decision Making, Gender Equality, Gender Roles and Relationships, Contraception, Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), HIV/AIDS, Pregnancy and Parenthood, Future Plans and Active involvement and citizenship. At the requests of schools, teachers, school counsellors and parents, we developed in 2018 a new programme that addresses the needs of lower secondary-school students (10-14 yo). „For Girls and Boys – development of socio-emotional skills and abilities” contributes to improvement of competencies teachers and school counsellors need for this level (disciplines: Counselling and Personal Development; Social Education; Health Education) through a training programme (20 hours) and materials for students and parents. The programme focuses on development from puberty to adolescence, covering four main modules that support the growing-up process, including autonomy and independence, preventing violence and healthy relationships: Human body and development at puberty; Self-esteem and relationships; Preventing violence; Values, family and future plans. „Me&You&Everyone We Know” was developed under a European project aimed at preventing sexual harassment in secondary schools in 2016-2018 - JUST/2015/RDAP/AG/SEXV/8585, in which Youth for Youth was a partner. The educational tool for the 3-4 hours workshop consists of 133 cards mapping 9 case studies on violence, focused on harassment, including (cyber)bullying. The training process for the educators, developed by us in 2019, is organized in 4 modules, as follows: Module I/ Educational Conversations: Adolescence; Social Values and Norms; Gender Equality and Gender Roles; Human Sexuality; Module II/ Deconstruction: Self-image and Self-esteem; Emotions; Personal Space and Limits; Assertive Communication; Module III/ Identification: Consent and assumed behaviours; Forms of Violence; Power in Relationships; On-line Violence; Module IV: Definitions and Framing: Definitions; Stereotypes, Prejudice; Stigma and Discrimination; Legislation, Institutions and Rights. In 2024, we developed and piloted in Bucharest a new programme, called „In Balance” - an extension for preventing (problematic) drugs use among adolescents. Thus, we added to the Me&You instrument 5 new case studies on drugs and corresponding cards (definitions, biases, contexts, characters, emotions), after extensive consultations with the adolescents and young people, school counsellors and psychologists and a meeting for professionals from education and training. We intend to scale up this programme within the country, as the need to address these themes is increasing. In 2025, besides the continuation of the existing programmes, we are in the process of developing a new intervention and piloting it in one technological high-school from the surroundings of Bucharest (Buftea/Ilfov). We are building a layered process aimed at transforming the school into a safer and friendlier environment, following the standards and guidelines of „health promoting schools” developed by the World Health Organization. A programme that we never intented to create is „Hybrid Roots – Humanitarian Response for Integration and Development/ adolescents and young people”. Developed in July 2022, due to the war in Ukraine, this programme is still functioning and adapting to the needs of the Ucrainian community living in Romania/ Bucharest, as Youth for Youth declared its role as a support organization for other institutions/ hubs/ NGOs etc. that are providing direct services. As a conclusion, those that met us, the Youth for Youth team (staff and volunteers), recognize the impact and effectiveness of our programmes. What we say as „the Youth for Youth spirit” – a combination of enthusiasm, commitment and quality standards is transmissible, with results in our community: - Our volunteers are well trained, through consistent processes - Our training and educational programmes are highly appreciated by our beneficiaries - The out-of-school activities are creative and innovative In terms of sustainability, we have the approval of responsible authorities for materials and programmes developed. The methodologies we use are interactive, young people themselves being involved in both the design and delivering the classes. In each school/ community we involve multi- and inter-disciplinary teams of peer-educators, teachers, school-counsellors and recently, medical staff, for the programmes to be impactful, effective and sustainable.
