Mission Statement
At Ocean Purpose Project (OPP), our mission is to safeguard and rejuvenate our oceans through innovative technologies and transformative behavior changes. We are driven by a heartfelt commitment to eradicating plastic pollution, which endangers marine biodiversity and the health of our planet. Why Our Work Matters Every year, millions of tons of plastic waste enter our oceans, threatening marine life and disrupting ecosystems. This pollution creates massive "dead zones" devoid of oxygen, where marine life cannot survive. Our mission is not just a technical challenge but a critical effort to preserve the natural balance of our oceans, which support the livelihoods and well-being of millions of people globally. Our Vision We envision a future where oceans and ecosystems thrive, supporting diverse marine life and sustainable human activities. By pioneering disruptive technologies and fostering global behavior change, we aim to ensure the long-term health of our oceans for the benefit of all life on Earth. Dedicated to Our Mission We are relentless in our pursuit, setting ambitious goals and persevering where others might give up. Our team consists of dedicated, innovative thinkers who are fully focused on achieving one of the most ambitious engineering feats of our time: ridding the world’s oceans of plastic. Drive for Improvement To navigate uncharted waters, we maintain a culture of transparency and continuous learning. We openly discuss challenges, support each other, and treat failures as opportunities to learn and improve. Delivering Impact Through pragmatic, focused, and disciplined execution, we maximize our efforts to collect plastic and restore marine environments. Our ultimate goal is to put ourselves out of business by solving the problem of ocean plastic pollution as swiftly as possible. Doing Together This global issue is too vast for any one entity to tackle alone. We build trust, collaborate with partners, and leverage collective strengths to drive impactful change. Celebrating team achievements and enjoying our work are integral to our approach. By joining forces with communities, organizations, and innovators worldwide, OPP strives to create a cleaner, healthier ocean environment. Our dedication to this mission is unwavering, knowing that the future of our planet and all its inhabitants depends on it.
About This Cause
The Ocean Purpose Project is Singapore’s first Blue Economy social enterprise and blue sustainability aggregator platform driving ocean conservation and plastic pollution prevention via disruptive and creative projects with mass-scale impact. Our off-grid beach office- the OPP Beach Hub sits in front of Pasir Ris beach, the base of our operations that allows us to testbed, prototype and understand how to create solutions from pollution through disruptive and creative projects with mass scale impact linking People, Private and Public sectors within ocean conservation. Our 3 core pillars are centred around key needs of humanity with regards to our oceans- waste, energy, water and food and finding unique combinations of often competing interests in commercialisation, silos in academia, deep tech and nature based tech innovation, environmental and social ecosystem needs, treasuring vital traditional and indigenous knowledge through an ecosystem approach. In waste and energy, Ocean Purpose Project’s unique selling point is to use innovative deep tech that is yet to enter the Singapore market, such as the conversion of ocean plastics to hydrogen which could turn polluted coastal communities into hydrogen producers. This is achieved through our proposal of the OPP PTF (Plastic to Fuel) unit - a $9 million SGD solution that is a mobile unit within a 40ft container purpose built for the thermal decomposition of mixed plastic waste into low sulphur fuels with 100% emission capture to be synthesised into hydrogen, carbon nanotubes and a host of other products. The outcome of the process is valuable products that can be used on-site in polluted communities or sold to off-takers with profits used to fund vital infrastructure, education and uplifting of poor communities playing a vital role in breaking the gridlock on ocean plastic inaction and creating a profit motive through energy creation with vast potential in smart cities’ waste management and green energy creation to achieve circular economy and zero waste goals. In water, Ocean Purpose Project’s bioremediation project is the first of its kind in our island nation that combines the knowledge of traditional farmers, native species of macroalgae and molluscs and marine biology to tackle harmful algae blooms through our seaweed mussel lines. We were also the catalyst for coral reforestation projects in Bali, Indonesia working with strong diving partners to create interlocked coral reef stars planted during the pandemic which today have turned undersea deserts into blooming new coral reefs, safeguarding Our organisation also holds frequent offline and online events to educate South East Asia from our humble beach in Pasir Ris, challenging Asia to move from the backseat of climate and ocean pollution conversations, going beyond beach clean ups and awareness campaigns towards igniting the spirit of mass behavioural change. Based on calculations by fellow fish farmers, traditional fish farms in Singapore comprise 84% of domestic seafood production. Harmful algae blooms threaten to wipe out our domestic seafood supply and cause widespread food shortage on our island. Addressing the global food crisis, Ocean Purpose Project’s bioremediation project is not just delivering proven results of how our seaweed and mussel lines have removed chemicals at sea and reduced the impact of algae bloom on fish kill incidents on a traditional farm. This has immense potential for the approximately 108 million small scale fish farmers world-wide, many of whom support and sustain the communities and families they are a part of. However our work doesn’t stop there- Ocean Purpose Project has already begun the creation of the OPP Herb Garden- Singapore’s first seaweed fertilised community garden. Here the seaweed and mussels grown are harvested and sequestered into the soil, creating a nutrient rich environment that is perfect for the wide range of Ayurvedic, Jamu and Traditional Chinese medical herbs grown which have been harvested and served as teas for staff and visitors. In fact our fish farmers regularly donate herbs to us and derive great pleasure from seeing them used by members of the Pasir Ris community to improve health. The central mission of the Ocean Purpose Project can be found in our company name itself- Purpose. Our purpose lies in moving beyond what is expected of an NGO and social enterprise, to recognize the ocean's value through expanding our vision and facilitating an equitable economic system that promotes efficient stewardship of the ocean and its resources for all coastal ecosystems above and below the sea. (About Our Founder) Mathilda’s Story: I’m not sure how I can distil my life into a few paragraphs or the vital catalyst moment that led me to start the Ocean Purpose Project. There have been so many highs and lows it is difficult to encapsulate this journey into just one page. To many I am a confident face and voice in front of the camera and on stage, projecting limitless energy- I recall a judge on the grant committee for seaweed once called me a bulldozer who can push through any barrier while on a beach clean up, a young man said I gave him “encik vibes” which Singaporeans will understand to mean I have a commanding presence. If I can take you back to 2015, I had a great life singing at some of the most beautiful stages around the world, working as a TV Producer, Radio DJ and Head of Social Media Communities that had me creating videos about a dizzying range of topics. As if there were not enough hours in a day, I also dragonboated and trained newbies to paddle. After returning from a dragonboat race in Boracay, my immune system crashed. Years later it was revealed the island had to be shut down for 6 months because of gross environmental violations such as raw sewage being emptied into the touristic beaches and toxic algae blooms. What I initially thought was food poisoning or a bad hangover became a host of intense autoimmune conditions, that made me lose my voice for 6 months, develop vitiligo where my skin and hair turned white and gave me intense joint pains and muscle spasms which turned my life into one of daily consistent pain. Out of this pain and deep seated feeling of unfairness, I felt I was drowning in the sharp change in direction of my life- a change I did not ask for. As someone who equates typical new age forms of healing to mental torture, the only way I knew how to heal myself was to build a project that could understand what had happened to me and find a way to prevent any of the millions of Asians especially children from falling sick because of the ocean. The only way to find some “purpose” to what had happened to me was to channel my TV producer and social media skills towards solutioning, dedicating my waking hours and physical pain into creating a platform for unique projects that could solve the same ocean pollution issues that made her sick. The only way I could move from being a victim of ocean pollution to creating a vision of ocean solutions was to share my story, no matter how difficult it is for me to open up and be the change I wanted to see in the world. Everyone said I was crazy to leave a dream job as a social media strategist at DBS bank in November 2019 to focus on my social enterprise, Ocean Purpose Project. We incorporated the Ocean Purpose Project on 3rd March 2020, then COVID19 hit. Me and my 70 year old mother would meet at sunrise to clean the beach and discuss the pandemic, not realising our actions would inspire others to sunrise clean ups. Within weeks as the restrictions intensified and Singapore locked down, we lost 200 clients. I felt I was being pulled under wave after wave of uncertainty, unable to step onto the sands of the beach during lockdown. Despite the tsunami of challenges, I thought to myself- let’s use the resources at hand for us to address the immediate need of the community. That’s what led our hundreds of volunteers to step forward and send 220,000 meals and 5000 sets of shampoo, shavers and soaps to migrant workers in lockdown. I will never forget the kindness of one migrant worker who received our meals and soaps and had gone on our website to learn about the Ocean Purpose Project. He messaged me to take care of my health and that when covid was gone/ the ocean work could continue. Reading his SMS saying ‘I’m proud of you’ and ‘Long Life’ as we scrambled to send them supplies made me realise that in the midst of intense struggle and adversity, what we do in kindness and sincerity can inspire so many, even those we help. Since then the kindness from our community, staff and volunteers is what gives me the energy to lead the Ocean Purpose Project. It’s impossible to understand how we have survived or to chronicle the sacrifices made by each member of the team. Each time I open the door to our beach office, I am greeted by the photographs of all who wear the Ocean Purpose Project T Shirt that is not for sale. Photographs of happy sweaty faces that show how duty, integrity and hard work under the sun and over the seas can create a Blue Ocean of possibility, rewriting what “Business As Usual” is all about. I am very proud of our many achievements and successes and I am delighted to share with you our first Ocean Purpose Project Impact Report. As you read this, beyond the numbers, graphs and words, I hope you can envision the smiling spirit of service to the great big blue that every one of us OPPeeps carries deep within us.
