Mission Statement

At Friends of the Disabled Society (FDS), our mission is to empower individuals with disabilities to lead independent and fulfilling lives. We achieve this by fostering community, providing essential life skills, and promoting mental wellness through our diverse programs. By offering social interaction opportunities, weekly home visits, entrepreneurial training, and mental health support, we help our disabled friends build confidence, develop self-sufficiency, and become integral, respected members of society. Join us in making a meaningful difference by supporting our mission and helping us expand our impact.

About This Cause

At Friends of the Disabled Society (FDS), we are dedicated to empowering individuals with disabilities to achieve their fullest potential and lead lives of dignity, independence, and self-sufficiency. Our mission is to break down the barriers that limit the lives of those with physical and intellectual disabilities. We recognize the financial, psychological, and emotional challenges that come with living in a world not designed for everyone. Through advocacy, education, and hands-on support, we strive to foster a society that values and includes all its members. Social Interaction Program (SIP): Since September 2000, our Social Interaction Program (SIP) has been fostering community and connection among our disabled friends. We host karaoke sessions at approved premises and organize successful bowling sessions at various bowling centers. Our recreational outings have included visits to the Singapore Zoological Gardens, a farm visit sponsored by Singapore Technologies, and a recent get-together at Bird Paradise. Additionally, we celebrate annual events such as our Christmas party, which brings joy and camaraderie to all participants. Home Visitation Program: Our Home Visitation Program ensures that we stay connected with our disabled friends and their families. We conduct weekly visits, providing staple food items to those in need and offering support and companionship. Through these visits, we build stronger relationships and understand the unique challenges faced by each family. We also collaborate with Nanyang Technological University’s (NTU) Welfare Service Club to bring volunteers who regularly visit these households. Over the years, we have assisted with domestic issues and mediated with official organizations to address various difficulties. Skills Entrepreneurship Program: The Skills Entrepreneurship Program empowers our disabled friends with valuable skills and entrepreneurial opportunities. Participants learn handicraft and jewelry-making while engaging with able-bodied volunteers, fostering a sense of community and inclusion. They also develop entrepreneurial skills by participating in authorized public sales, which boosts their confidence, taps into their creativity, and equips them with practical skills for self-sufficiency. Furthermore, those who excel in their craft have the opportunity to coach others during workshops, fostering a cycle of learning and empowerment. By teaching others, they reinforce their own skills, build leadership qualities, and contribute to a supportive community of shared growth and success. Mental Wellness Program: Recognizing the importance of mental health, our Mental Wellness Program provides comprehensive support to our disabled friends. We offer counseling services, mindfulness workshops, and peer support groups to address the psychological and emotional challenges they may face. By promoting mental wellness, we aim to enhance their overall quality of life and empower them to overcome obstacles with resilience and confidence. We believe that true assistance empowers individuals to take control of their own lives. Our comprehensive programs provide valuable life skills, creative and vocational training, and opportunities for personal growth and financial independence. By equipping our friends with the tools and confidence to succeed, we aim to transform lives and promote a culture of self-efficacy and respect. Currently, we support over 200 individuals through various initiatives that include creative arts, administrative duties, and sales training. However, to continue and expand our impactful work, we need your support. Your generous donations will help us provide the necessary resources, training, and facilities that our friends with disabilities need to thrive. Join us in our mission to create a more inclusive, empowering, and compassionate society for all. Together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of our disabled friends. Thank you for your support.
