About This Cause
Since 2012, Caregivers Alliance Limited (CAL) has been seeking to improve the lives of caregivers of persons with mental health issues (PMHIs) through quality training and facilitating them with caregiving support. Its signature Caregivers-to-Caregivers Education Programme (C2C) equips caregivers with knowledge relating to mental illness and soft skills to empathise and communicate with their loved ones with mental health issues. As the same time, caregivers’ own emotional well-being is also supported through other caregivers. Besides the full 12-week C2C course, there are also the 1-day mental health workshop and the modular training course which caregivers and can avail themselves to. These programmes are usually conducted at various hospitals or community spaces around the island. In 2013, the Caregivers Support Centre (CSC) was set up at the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) as a one-stop information and resource centre for existing and prospective caregivers offering outreach, information and referral, and emotional support services to caregivers. In 2015, in order to address the needs of caregivers who are unable to attend the 12-week C2C course due to various difficulties, the Individual Training & Support (ITS) programme was introduced. It takes the form of face-to-face meetings, accompanied by follow-up phone calls and referrals to appropriate professional agency or support groups where necessary. These three major initiatives provide a comprehensive suite of services to meet the needs of caregivers of PMHI, with CSC serving the outreach function to increase awareness of the resources available to them, whilst C2C and ITS aiming to equip them with the practical knowledge and ability so that they can better cope with their caregiving duties.
