About This Cause

MINDS was founded in May 1962 under the name of Singapore Association for Retarded Children (SARC). A group of philanthropists saw the need to provide equal opportunities for children with intellectual disabilities to receive education and later, to be integrated as contributing and responsible citizens in Singapore. Thus far, MINDS has grown to be one of Singapore’s largest and oldest Voluntary Welfare Organizations serving persons with intellectual disability across their life-span. Our services encompass: • 4 Special Education Schools • 3 Regional Hubs (aka Employment Development Centres) • 8 Community Hubs (aka Training & Development Centres) • 3 Satellite Hubs (aka MINDS Hubs) • 1 Multi-service Residential Home – which includes a Home, a Hostel and a Children’s Wing • Caregivers Support Services Centre • Home-based Care Services • Me Too! Club (A befriending programme to PWIDs who are socially isolated or are unable to participate in community-based services.) • Appropriate Adult Programme (Since the start of 2016, MINDS was appointed by the National Council for Social Service (NCSS) as the service administrators for the Appropriate Adult (AA) programme which provides support to Singapore Police Force (SPF), Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) and Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA) during the investigating interviews involving detainees, victims or witnesses suspected of having Intellectual Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and/or Mental Health issues To date, MINDS serves close to 9,000 beneficiaries and their families in our 25 facilities located island-wide and aims to become a world-class VWO that advances the development, well-being and aspirations of PWIDs and their integration into mainstream society.
