Mission Statement
AFA is a community-based non-governmental organisation dedicated to fighting AIDS/HIV infection in Singapore. It draws upon a network of health care professionals, advocates, educators and volunteers, to implement educational, testing, treatment and welfare programmes. These are designed to reduce the impact of HIV infection, to support HIV care services for needy patients, to overcome AIDS-related stigma and discrimination, and to reduce and hopefully eventually stop the spread of HIV infection. Formed in 1988 in response to global and local spread of HIV infection. It is a registered Charity and IPC (Institution of Public Character). It has introduced numerous innovative projects and runs a broad range of support, welfare and educational programmes. The society has a staff of 10, and a volunteer pool of over 200, it is governed by a volunteer Executive Committee and funded through programmatic grants from government agencies and from donations from private individuals and businesses.
About This Cause
PREVENTION Our prevention efforts are focused on the most vulnerable and key affected populations, these include youth, gay and bisexual men, highrisk heterosexual men, and sex workers. Over the years our programmes have prevented thousands of HIV infections. AFA operates the largest Anonymous HIV Testing Site as well as a Mobile Testing Service. We provide educational talks, and convene the biannual Singapore AIDS Conference. CARE We provide financial assistance for HIV medications and financial assistance through the Paddy Chew Patient Welfare Fund, the Pregnant Mothers Fund, the Linkage-to-Care Fund, and the Care for Families Fund. AFA provides support groups for HIV-infected persons coordinated through our Positive Living Centre. ADVOCACY AFA has stood for the rights and fair treatment of Persons Living with HIV/AIDS. Our advocacy has made it possible for HIV infected foreign spouses of citizens to remain in the country, it has made possible humane and dignified funeral and burial rights for persons with HIV/AIDS. We have been successful in increasing access to affordable HIV treatment and strive to reduce stigmatization and discrimination of HIV infected persons.
