Despite the challenges life has put in his way - cerebral palsy - spastic quadriparesis, epilepsy and strabismus - Samko is our smiling annual hero. Every day he gets up with determination and fights for his better world. Together with him, we fight not only for today, but also for his future. Join us and discover the story of courage, love and immense determination of our little warrior.
About This Cause
Birth Sam's story began to be written at birth... It was Thursday (7/7/2022): hardened amniotic fluid combined with wedged shoulders. At 17:45 we saw a small curled up ball. "Why isn't she crying?" I asked the doctor with tears in my eyes. There was silence after my question. I only saw the reflection of tears in the eyes of the doctor and nurses. The male was not breathing. They had to keep him breathing. And suddenly I just heard soft crying. "He lives." A few hours later, when I recovered from the anesthesia, the doctor came to us and informed us that Samko had to be transferred to the ICU in Kramár, because Samko's condition had started to deteriorate. It was midnight, everything was quiet, and we were just waiting for the ambulance to come with the incubator so they could transfer him. We held him by his little hand until they took him away. We stood by the window and watched him leave. And suddenly we were left alone, just the two of us, and we didn't know what was going to happen. It was the worst night of our lives. We were helpless and had no idea what was going on. We only got the morning to call in the morning. It was the longest wait we have experienced. When we called in the morning, we were told that Sam's condition was stable. First days together I was recovering in the hospital after giving birth, and my father visited Samko every day in Kramár. On the fourth day we were finally all together, although still in the hospital. Sam's condition was improving day by day. On the morning of the sixth day, the doctor informed me that if Samko's sono head turns out well, they will let us go home on Friday. But on this day, it all just started... Samko did not want to feel as if he had forgotten. He was still crying. During the evening feeding, my hands even began to tremble strangely. I immediately told the nurse, but when she came to Samko, he was just lying there. She said she watches it at night. The whole night I sat on the bed a few floors below where Samko was lying, and I wondered if everything was okay, if I should go see him in the ICU. I'm so weird, I can't even describe the feeling. However, I told myself that he was in good hands and that everything would definitely be fine. In the morning during the visit, I asked the doctor if something similar had happened during the night. She looked at me in amazement and didn't know what I was talking about. I also asked the nurse, but her reaction looked the same. Nobody knew about anything. Two hours later, Samko started shaking again, blueness and drooling. I quickly run to the doctor and show her the video: "Samko stops breathing, give me the ambuka!". And I just stood there helplessly and shouted: "Samka, please breathe, stay here with me. " Females must quickly switch to EEG. We get into the elevator and go to the neurological department with a large oxygen bomb. Saturation decreases. They have to resuscitate Samka again for examination. "Give oxygen, we're going." Words that I will never forget in my life and the memory of which always makes me shudder and bring tears to my eyes. My son is on the threshold of life and I could not help him in any way. It happened exactly four times that day. Samka had to be resuscitated four times. On that day, they also had to do an MRI, which showed that Samko has severe multifocal epilepsy and a severe brain hemorrhage. Samko had to relearn how to poop, step by step. First sucking through the nasal tube, and then again through the bottle. A device helped him to breathe. Well, our hero managed to do it all over again in two weeks. He started to breathe on his own and we could go home. Exactly 21 days and we are home. The first six months of life Finally at home. We left the hospital with the information that Samko has epilepsy and that we will have a hard time. How hard? What does this mean for us? We only got doctors' appointments. The first neurological examination came after 3 months. And that's when we started to understand. Thanks to the million questions we asked the doctor that day, we understood that something serious was going on. In addition to the fact that Samko had epilepsy, he also has hypertension. Hyper what…? We didn't know what was going on, but we knew that we had to start finding out and solve it, that no one would just tell us anything, and especially no one would give us instructions on what to do next. That same day, we went to the rehabilitation department for an appointment. At the follow-up examination, the doctor informed us that there was nothing to wait for, and that Samko had to start exercising immediately. But since he has severe epilepsy, Bobath recommends the concept. During this period, Samko took strong drugs that sedated him, and because of them, Samko did not progress completely. But we didn't let that discourage us. Samko and I went to rehabilitation twice a week, and together with him we underwent one medical examination after another. Already in the first half of the year, we completed up to 20 examinations with this little ball of ours. We consider Samko's greatest achievements to be the fact that Samko started making sounds. "Agu" and "gag" were Samko's first tangible manifestations. It was an immense joy for us, since no one guaranteed us even such progress, so we saw it as a success, as the success of our little warrior and as a success for us - his parents, who decided that no matter how difficult it might be, we are here for him and forever we fight by his side. 6 months to present January 7, 2023 – We "celebrated" Sam's six-month anniversary at a neurology check-up. And that's where "cerebral palsy" was heard for the first time. Inhale Exhale. A lump in the throat. Okay, so at least we know what to expect and what's going on. We take Samko and our fate in our hands and let's do everything to prove that miracles exist. We don't give up because we know that even Samko doesn't plan to. February 2023 - Tetis Dunajská Lužná - Sam's first rehabilitation stay. We didn't know what to expect, but we were full of expectations. Samko managed it with complete nobility and lasted 9 days. Enjoying progress, even if small, is sometimes the most important thing on this journey. May 2023 - Hendi center Piešťany - Sam's second rehabilitation stay. The male was 10 months old. This stay was more time-consuming for us due to the number of procedures, but we managed it. Here, too, Samko did a good job. 5 days of intensive training. Every day for an hour and a half. June 2023 – Since Samko has strabismus (i.e. he squints), he starts wearing glasses after an agreement with the ophthalmologist. July 2023 - Centrum Napreduj Trenčín - Sam's third rehabilitation stay. During this stay, Samko showed us that exercise can be pleasant and without crying. Every day, you spent 2 hours a day for 5 whole days. We're moving on. August 2023 - Centrum Napreduj Trenčín - Samko's fourth rehabilitation stay, which he did well and managed like a master. 2 hours a day for 5 days in a row. Second month in a row. And we move on. September 2023 – Tetis Dunajská Lužná – Sam's fifth rehabilitation stay. Samko took 5 days out of 9. He tried his best, but something just didn't feel right. So we ended our stay earlier. Everything is about Samko and despite the fact that we want him to exercise, not at any cost. Sometimes less is more. October 2023 - Napreduj Trenčín center - Sam's sixth rehabilitation stay. The male was a year and three months old. This little man has been pooping again for 5 days for 2 hours a day. It's incredible how he did it. And what did these stays give us? All these stays, Samko practiced according to the Bobath method, as due to epilepsy and a heart problem with which Samko was born, Vojt's method was not recommended to us yet. Samko progressed mentally during all these stays. Of course, also on the physical side - it is more flexible, more stable and stronger. In between stays, Samko went to rehabilitation and outpatient clinics, and he worked hard at home as well. For us, it meant getting up at five in the morning, loading into the car so that we could be at rehabilitation by 8:00. One way 130 km. The car has become our second home. Of course, in between various medical examinations, at that time Samko had already visited 14 specialist clinics. July 2023 - Exactly - 7/17/2023 - and it's on paper, it's really real. It is cerebral palsy - spastic quadriparesis. But that doesn't change anything, at the end of the day it's just paper. We have to move on. October 2023 – Sam's health condition is stabilized and we start with Vojt's method based on several recommendations. We believe that Samka will move forward. We have to at least try.
