Mission Statement

Investigative Center of Jan Kuciak (ICJK) was founded as a response to the murder of Slovak investigative journalist Jan Kuciak in 2018, with the aim to continue his work and preserve his legacy. ICJK is a non-profit organization, the first of its kind in Slovakia dedicated solely to investigative journalism, and the only Slovak member of the OCCRP network. The Centre aims to be an independent outlet and a mediator of cooperation between different local and international media as well as promoter of the freedom of the press and security of journalists . Our source of funding are grant schemes and small donors.

About This Cause

Investigative Center of Ján Kuciaka (ICJK) is a non-profit independent organization that has been established in 2018 after the murder of investigative journalist Ján Kuciak and his fiancé Martina Kušnirová. Main goal of ICJK is to investigate international organized crime activities in Slovakia, corruption, money laundering and other kinds of domestic and cross-border criminal activities, possible influence from abroad and also fighting hoaxes, disinformation and propaganda in Slovakia by uncovering the real facts and the sources of disinformation. ICJK is an independent investigative center, with the long-term goal to become one of the most important players on the Slovak media landscape in terms of investigative journalism and international investigative cooperation. ICJK also serves as a coordination hub in investigative projects e.g. Kočner’s Library coordinating journalists from 11 Slovak media outlets and in a project on the Hungarian influence from 3 media outlets. ICJK publishes its stories on its own website www.icjk.sk and also on the website of its partners (Daily SME, aktuality.sk, .týždeň etc.). ICJK continues in the legacy of murdered investigative journalist Ján Kuciak, who was well know by his respect to facts and data based journalism and who promoted cooperation of journalists with the common goal of uncovering the truth. ICJK is also committed to promote freedom of the press by its activities such as taking part in professional discussions, discussion with students of journalism and other areas. We do provide independent information to the media and to the whole society on matters of public concern and we are able to challenge governments and other vested interests over a wide variety of matters of legitimate concern
