Mission Statement
In the service of human dignity. Visions of priority areas: COLLABORATORS: Caritas are skilled and heartfelt associates who do their work out of love for their fellow human beings. PROGRAMS: Caritas effectively and comprehensively helps people in need by protecting human dignity, building an intergenerational solidarity living environment and being close to all people in need and especially to families, children and the elderly. SOCIETY: Caritas is an advocate for the dignity of every person, especially the poor and the wounded. As a communion, Caritas creates a home for all by engaging with others in society and building a just, compassionate and solidarity society by informing and raising awareness. NETWORK: Caritas acts as a network (communion) that connects stakeholders with a clear identity to an effective and responsive pastoral organism. FUNDAMENTAL VALUES AND PRINCIPLES Caritas strives to respond to the real needs of people in need, maintain their dignity, work closely with them, empower them, and with all possible assistance, empower them and take responsibility for their lives as much as possible. Caritas always and everywhere advocates that human dignity is at the heart of the planning of social, economic and other policies of the country. Human dignity is inextricably linked to human rights, which are justified by law. Caritas collaborators help individuals, families, groups, regardless of biological, personality, status, national, religious, ideological, political or other differences. All persons in need of material, spiritual or mental assistance are accepted, as they are, and rely on the positive aspects of their lives when working with them. By providing assistance to people in need, in collaboration with other organizations, the Caritas associates protect the dignity, privacy, personal, psychophysical and spiritual integrity and individuality of the individual and respect their culture and values.
About This Cause
Caritas Slovenia was founded in 1990. In 1995 became a member of Caritas Internationalis (CI) and Caritas Europe. Its’ mission is to care for the human dignity and advocacy of people at risk of poverty and social exclusion, especially families and children, elderly people, migrants and homeless. It works in Slovenia and abroad in countries of sub-Saharan Africa Europe (Balkans) and Asia. In Slovenia it provides a variety of services to cover basic needs (food, school supplies, paying bills etc.) and also social welfare programmes (drug and alcohol addicts prevention and rehabilitation programs, maternity homes, homeless clinics for people without health insurance, assistance to victims of trafficking, programs for disadvantage children). It also implement awareness raising and advocacy project on global issues in Slovenia (focus on schools, politicians and general public), on the issues of climate changes, HIV/AIDS, migration and development etc. in collaboration with other national Caritas. Overseas, their development projects include support for improving health conditions (such as construction of health centres, prevention - health education and career training of local health staff), possibilities to quality education of children (building schools, support of teachers with proper payment, providing school books and meals for children etc.), safe and secure water provision, food security for malnourishes children and support poor families with livelihoods. Caritas Slovenia in the implementation of individual projects and assistance programs in Slovenia and abroad cooperate with the government and other NGOs. In 2016 was in different Caritas Slovenia programs included 163,400 people. Material assistance was provided to 96,270 people in need across Slovenia, among them 81.356 members of families, 11,242 elderly, 2,318 migrants and 1.354 homeless. The material aid distributed included 3,668 tons of food, clothes, payment orders to 14,060 people and school supplies such as workbooks to 12,548 children, 1,047 people in bigger distresses and emergencies received material help in higher amount etc. Beside material support Caritas professional staff and parish volunteers also offered 10,000 individual counselling’s, implement home visits for 31,290 and organised events 20,747 for elderly people, 20,000 children and youth were included in different activities, including in youth centres, where is provided school aid etc. Their social welfare programmes provided assistance to 3 victims of human trafficking, maternity homes to 176 women and children, drug rehabilitation to 195 drug addicts and provided care in shelters to 73 homeless people. In summer seaside camps were included 687 children, family members and elderly. Caritas Slovenia emergency response team provides humanitarian relief in the form of food, tents, water and clothing in the cases of floods and other disasters in Slovenia (mostly every year). In year 2015 and 2016 in cooperation with government and other CSOs in Slovenia provided assistance to over 490.000 refugees and migrants which crossed Slovenia. Overseas, Caritas Slovenia in last 11 years in cooperation with local organisations in sub-Saharan Africa countries (Rwanda, Burundi, Central African Republic, Malawi, Zambia, Botswana and Madagascar), especially with Slovene missionaries and local Caritas, and with co-financing of Ministry of foreign affairs of Republic of Slovenia, Missionary office and other European Caritas, build or reconstructed and equipped 6 schools and 1 kindergarten, 4 health centres and 3 maternity hospitals and 10 bigger water wells. It also supported HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases prevention programs and reproductive health programs and capacity building of local health staff. It supports also food purchases for 3 centres for malnourished children and school meals for one primary school. In this areas live a population of 250.000 people. From 2010 on we implement a program “With work to a decent life” through which we support 300 poor families in different African countries, 14 families in Albania and 9 in Sri Lanka. Through the program poor and unemployed parents get work on the missions where we build schools, health centres are there implemented other activities (like care for elderly in Albania) and earn for surviving of their families – that they have for food, medicines, for school fees and for housing. In Sri Lanka is implemented in cooperation with Caritas Sri Lanka and families get the funds in the way of micro – financing to start their business. In Western Balkans is delivered in cooperation with local Caritas material assistance and supported programs like home care. With co-financing of Ministry of republic of Slovenia and in partnership with Caritas in Bosnia and Hercegovina and Caritas in Serbia, we implement development cooperation projects for social and economic empowerment of women in years 2017 to 2019, in Serbia also awareness raining project for school children on issues of taking care for environment, active citizenship and voluntarism and children rights, which includes also trainings for teachers from 2011 on. In the cases of bigger international emergencies Caritas Slovenia organises fundraising campaigns in Slovenia and supports local Caritas through CI EA. Caritas Slovenia organisational structure consists of national office, which is located in Ljubljana, 6 diocesan Caritas and 457 parish Caritas which are spread throughout Slovenia, working side by side to respond to real needs of those most in distress. All over Slovenia Caritas has approximately 100 staff and 11,000 volunteers that carry out activities and programmes. In 2016 Caritas volunteers did 547,474 voluntary hours.
