Mission Statement

Mission Statement for Protea School Funding Application Mission Statement At Protea School, we are dedicated to providing an inclusive and holistic educational environment for learners with neurological and specific learning barriers, spanning from Grade 1 to Grade 12. Our mission is to empower each student—regardless of their individual challenges, including high-functioning autism, severe behavioural issues, epilepsy, visual impairments, hearing impairments, and cerebral palsy—by offering tailored educational support within a multicultural, dual-medium setting of English and Afrikaans. Our Vision We envision a community where every learner, especially those from underprivileged socio-economic backgrounds, can thrive academically, socially, and emotionally. We strive to be a beacon of hope, enabling our students not only to complete their education but also to develop skills that will foster self-reliance and entrepreneurship, thus addressing the high unemployment rates affecting our communities. Key Objectives 1. Holistic Support: To provide continuous, multi-disciplinary support for our learners through a dedicated team of licensed therapists, educators, and support staff who address each student's unique needs. 2. Enhanced Learning Environment: To create a safe, spacious, and resourceful learning environment by upgrading our facilities, which currently face significant limitations due to outdated infrastructure and insufficient space for extracurricular activities. 3. Comprehensive Curriculum and Extracurricular Opportunities: To offer a CAPS-aligned curriculum alongside diversified extracurricular programs, including skills development in fields like robotics, hand crafts, beauty and wellness, Brics CADD, laser and plasma cutting, sewing and pattern design, vegetable gardening and driving simulation that equip our learners with practical life skills. 4. Inclusive Extracurricular Activities: To expand physical and creative activities that promote wellness and teamwork, providing every learner the opportunity to explore their interests and talents without limitations. 5. Infrastructure Improvement: To secure funding to address critical infrastructure issues—rebuilding unsafe classrooms, upgrading bathrooms, improving safety, and maintaining facility structures—to ensure optimal safety and a conducive learning environment. Commitment to Growth and Development Protea School is committed to continuous improvement through regular evaluation and re-development of our programs. We invest in in-service training for our staff and utilize outsourced programs that enhance teaching methodologies, ensuring that we remain at the forefront of inclusive education. Call to Action We invite stakeholders and partners to support our mission in transforming the educational landscape for our learners. Together, we can break the barriers of inequality, foster self-sufficiency, and inspire a brighter future for the youth at Protea School. We believe that with the right resources and support, every student can rise to their potential and contribute positively to society. Join us in making this vision a reality.

About This Cause

Proposal for Infrastructure Improvements at Protea School Introduction At Protea School, we are dedicated to creating an inclusive, supportive, and engaging learning environment for our diverse learners who face neurological and specific learning barriers. We recognize that the physical environment plays a crucial role in achieving our mission. Therefore, we have identified several critical areas for improvement that will enhance our teaching and learning experience and foster holistic development. Areas for Improvement 1. Space Limitations With only 8922 square meters, Protea School struggles to accommodate its growing number of learners and extracurricular activities. To provide a conducive and engaging environment:  We require additional open spaces for play, socialization, and physical activities, allowing learners to flourish both academically and socially. 2. Unsafe Premises Our outdated buildings are not only costly to maintain but also pose health and safety risks due to the presence of asbestos. Immediate actions needed include:  Rebuilding classrooms that do not comply with safety standards, which will result in enhancing learner safety and comply with regulations. 3. Parking and Transit Concerns Limited parking creates safety hazards, with the bus parking situated outside the pemises impacting traffic flow. Solutions include:  Expanding the parking area for educators and dedicated bus lanes to ensure a secure environment for all. 4. Bathroom Facilities Our current container bathrooms’ present significant hygiene and safety issues. Upgrades needed:  Rebuild bathrooms with stable structures to ensure the safety and health of our learners. 5. Classroom Stability The six mobile classrooms currently in use are unstable and hinder the ability to utilize ICT resources:  Implement structural upgrades to ensure classroom stability, providing a safe learning environment that supports effective teaching. 6. Roof and Gutter Maintenance Our aging infrastructure requires consistent upkeep to prevent further damage:  Engage in regular maintenance on roofs and gutters to extend their lifespan and to ensure a safe learning environment. Proposed Enhancements for Holistic Development To support our learners' physical, social, and emotional growth, we propose the following enhancements: 1. Park/Try Gym Develop a dedicated area for gross motor skills training to foster physical development. 2. Physical Training Facilities Replace the surface of the netball court and install safety nets to create a secure area for sports activities. 3. Volleyball Court Construct a volleyball court to enhance physical fitness and coordination skills among learners. 4. Engineering Graphics and Design Facilities Provide ergonomic drawing chairs to facilitate effective curriculum delivery in our design classes. 5. Outdoor Learning Spaces Install outdoor furniture for learners to enjoy during breaks, promoting social interaction in natural settings. 6. Shade Structures Construct shade nets or gazebos outside to protect learners from heat elements while engaging in outdoor activities. 7. Upgraded Parking and Gym Facilities Improve parking areas and install a physical training hall above the parking space to maximize utility and safety. 8. Gymnasium Equipment Invest in gym equipment to support physical fitness, including: • 3 rowing machines • 3 treadmills • 3 gym bicycles • 3 steppers 9. Facility Aesthetics and Maintenance Address cosmetic and structural issues to enhance the learning environment: • Paint window frames • Fix uneven corridors • Rebuild senior boys' ablution facilities damaged by structural cracks
