Mission Statement
To systemically eradicate food poverty, insecurity and hunger in South African communities and households as a foundational sustainability and socio-economic developmental issue. To implement sustainable and scalable solutions to food, nutrition and economic inclusion challenges in South African communities and households through the implementation of Reel Gardening's growing technology, Agri-education and strategic collaborations with like-minded, technical partners, funders and community development organisations.
About This Cause
Reel life NPC has been implementing school gardens for a decade with a historical focus on schools growing produce to feed the pupils. However with the huge increase in food poverty and insecurity, it is simply impossible for the school to take on this responsibility for their pupils. Furthermore schools want to be places for learning and skills transfer - and the model doesn't address this issue in the wider household. As such Reel Life has pivoted our solutions to also enable local households to become responsible for their own food security with the school or ECD centre being leveraged as a community node. The Household Garden in a Box was developed specifically to address this need By giving households and communities the opportunity to grow fresh produce in whatever space is available with less water, time, and access to education/skills to do so effectively, we have an opportunity to contribute to breaking the systemic cycle of food poverty and insecurity. Reel Life's goal is to enable 125 000 Households to get growing in the next three years. This will enable the sustainable food security for 500 000 people. Reel Life's looks to create links between all of its gardens to enable the activation of a larger ecosystem with an ultimate goal of leapfrogging townships and rural towns from the tragic pressure that comes from a fast declining economy, having no new industries and limited interest from investors, to an era of enablement, empowerment and entrepreneurship including agri-entrepreneurship Reel Gardening's patented seed tape kits enable anyone to start a growing journey. The simple technology led process, takes someone from seed to harvest in a simple, daily step by step process which enables a greater chance of success with limited resources. This positive experience with growing crops fosters confidence and an appetite to take the leap from backyard grower to commercial contract grower. Once approximately 1000 households are willing to and able to expand their feeding gardens to incorporate income gardens, an Agri-hub may be erected to enable the purchase, aggregation, processing and sale of these locally grown vegetables into local (and international) off-take agreements. Households who are sustainably selling through the hub and wish to expand beyond their backyards are introduced to our Agriprenure training partners who look to develop emerging small scale commercial growers.
