Mission Statement
Mission Statement 1. We are committed to the welfare of animals. 2. We fight animal injustice, ignorance and cruelty by example, education, care-giving and relationship-building. 3. We operate in a business-like manner, with integrity, courtesy and fairness. 4. We appreciate and respect our staff, society members and all dedicated supporters. We believe that every living creature has a fundamental value and is a sentient being. We consider that the welfare of an animal includes its physical and mental state and that good animal welfare implies both fitness and a sense of well-being. Five Freedoms We believe that an animal’s welfare should be considered in terms of five freedoms: 1. Freedom from hunger and thirst – by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain health and vigour. 2. Freedom from discomfort – by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area. 3. Freedom from pain, injury and disease – by prevention, rapid diagnosis and treatment 4. Freedom to express normal behaviour – by providing sufficient space, proper facilities and company of the animal’s own kind. 5. Freedom from fear and distress – by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.
About This Cause
The Animal Welfare Society Port Elizabeth (AWS PE) is an open shelter which offers a safe place for unwanted, lost or abandoned animals. AWS PE was founded in 1971 as a result of the difficulty that the municipality in Port Elizabeth was experiencing in coping adequately with the number of stray animals and cruelty cases in the city. Our catteries and kennels house stray and surrendered pets who are available for adoption. We accept all animals brought to us, and run a 24-hour service to deal with the many cases of cruelty and neglect which are reported to us. Our animal crematorium is a much needed facility in the city and directly benefits the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in terms of reducing landfill costs. Our staff complement of 35 staff members, includes two full-time inspectors as well as a qualified veterinarian and we are privileged to enjoy the help of many volunteers. As a registered NPO, AWS PE accepts the “Codes of Good Practice for South African Non-profit Organisations” as recommended by the Department of Social Development. We run monthly Executive Committee meetings and we are in possession of a current Tax Clearance Certificate, audited financials, Annual General Meeting Minutes and our NPO status is in good standing.
