About This Cause

Oliver’s Village is situated on the outskirts of Daveyton at 145 Malherbe Street, Putfontein. Development at Oliver’s Village started in 2009. The entire village is designed to be an eco-friendly, self-sustaining community. Oliver’s Village is totally off the grid, relying on renewable energy such as solar power, harvested rainwater and biogas. To date a number of facilities have been completed. These include: • Education centre; • Early childhood development centre; • Computer training centre; • Photo-voltaic station and biogas digester; • Community vegetable garden; • Fruit orchard and vegetable farm; • Soup kitchen; • Grade R classroom container conversion; • Off-campus classrooms. Early Childhood Development Centre We currently have a 120 children attending our pre-school, their ages ranging from 2 to 5 years old. Our pre-school is managed by 8 full-time staff members. The objective of our pre-school is not just focused on education, but also on assisting the parents of the children who attend our school by providing a safe and secure facility where their children can be attended to while trying to obtain employment. In addition, we provide the children with a daily breakfast, lunch and snack. Education Centre Our Mathematics and Physical Science program focuses on assisting Grade 12 learners who have failed their mathematics and physical science matric exams, or those learners who would like to achieve a higher passing grade in order to progress to higher education. Oliver’s Village achieved a 97.3% passing rate in 2019, and have been rated as one of the best re-write centres in the Daveyton area by the Department of Education. Our students are taught throughout the year, including school holidays, in order for them to be well-prepared for their supplementary or year-end exams. Computer Centre Our computer classes have an intake of 30 students every 8 weeks. Our courses are accredited with MICT SETA and open to any individual who wants to attend, regardless of age or qualification. We are currently expanding our computer centre to accommodate a further 30 students. Soup Kitchen We provide a meal to approximately 300 beneficiaries from our soup kitchen per day. Our beneficiaries are local community members, especially the elderly and school going children. Community Vegetable Garden At our community vegetable garden, we train more than 20 beneficiaries per grow season in how to manage and maintain a vegetable garden. Our beneficiaries can then use these skills to implement their own vegetable gardens. Oliver’s Village Enterprise Program (PTY) was established in 2019. All proceeds from our Enterprise Development program goes to Oliver’s Village NPC, which is 100% black beneficiary based as defined in the B-BBEE Codes of Good Practice. We currently have two areas which fall under our Enterprise Program. Home Bakery Program We have been managing our own bakery at Oliver’s Village for nearly two years now. This bakery has been responsible for all of Oliver’s Village’s bread requirements We have recently extended our bakery which now consists of 5 stalls – 4 bakery units and 1 cleaning/washing stall. We use low-tech wood burning ovens in our bakery to bake bread, Chelsea buns, pizzas and muffins. The main objective of our bakery program is twofold: 1 To provide female beneficiaries with a skill that can earn them an income; 2 To provide our pre-school and soup kitchen beneficiaries with bread on a daily basis. We train 4 beneficiaries at a time and provide them with all the ingredients that they would require for their produce. The beneficiaries then sell their baking goods to the community and earn an income from the sales. Oliver’s Village receives a small amount of the income in order to cover some of the operational costs. Agricultural Food Gardens We currently have various organic food gardens and a community food garden at the village. Our organic vegetable food gardens give us the opportunity to reduce harmful pesticides, further promoting health through the vegetables richness in nutrients, which we provide to our community and beneficiaries. The sale of some of these vegetables to local markets also assists Oliver’s Village by generating an income, therefore proving self-sustainability to our organisation.
