Fundation Segunda Parte is dedicated to improving health and quality of life of people with neurological condition through physical activity and sport.
About This Cause
According to the WHO (World Health Organization), over 1 in 3 people affected by neurological conditions, the leading cause of illness and disability worldwide. Neurological condition are the third most common cause of disability and premature death in the EU and their prevalence and burden will likely increase with the progressive ageing of the European population. It is the great challenge of the new longevity in terms of health. One of the most common cause is stroke. Every year there are 120,000 people who suffer a stroke in Spain, 50% will have disabling sequelae for life and the incidence will increase by 35% in 2035. The health system is extraordinary saving the lives of people who suffer a stroke or other kind of neurological diseases, increasing life expectancy of people with neurological condition but it is essential to generate healthy habits in this collective. Having an active life determines your health, reduces your dependence and saves enormous health costs. 70% of the people with ABI have some kind of limitation in daily activities, affecting their social, work, family, and emotional lives. 40% have depression as a direct consequence of their acquired condition. Our solution involves providing adapted and accessible physical activity for people with neurological condition in their nearby sports center – creating an inclusive environment. This approach aims to enhance their quality of life, self-esteem, and physical condition, providing a significant opportunity for social inclusion. Scientific evidence supports interventions during both the subacute and chronic phases. Many neurorehabilitation centers incorporate sports programs to promote healthy habits. Sustained engagement in physical and sports activities significantly contributes to improving the physical and mental health, as well as the overall quality of life for this people with neurological condition and their close circles. Engaging in physical and sports activities becomes even more crucial during the chronic phase. Introducing sports as a lifelong routine brings about improvements in physical and mental health, enhancing the quality of life. Therefore, Ashoka has selected the Founder Marta Pérez as Ashoka Fellow in the world’s largest network of social entrepreneurs. Our researcher team are pioneer in scientifically demonstrating the benefits of physical activity and sports for people with neurological condition, and we have led six scientific papers published in international journals of open access.
