Mission Statement
Fundation Segunda Parte is dedicated to improving health and quality of life of people with neurological condition through physical activity and sport.
About This Cause
Neurological condition are the third most common cause of disability and premature death in the EU and their prevalence and burden will likely increase with the progressive ageing of the European population. It is the great challenge of the new longevity in terms of health One of the most common cause is stroke. 500,000 people in Spain live with ABI, a number that is expected to increase by threefold in the coming years due to a variety of reasons. Brain stroke, which is the cause of 80% of ABI, will increase its incidence by 35% in 2035. 1 out of 6 citizens will suffer a stroke as a direct consequence of stress, unhealthy eating habits, and a sedentary lifestyle. This silent pandemic, with 120,000 strokes already happening each year, determines functional aftereffects of various kinds and degrees of severity. Medical and scientific advances make it possible to save more and more lives after traumatic and nontraumatic accidents such as head injuries, stroke, or brain tumors, but, at the same time, this increases the number of people with acquired disabilities. For example, stroke is the second cause of dementia and the first cause of disability in adults. In Spain there is no public post-hospital care for the rehabilitation of aftereffects, drastically limiting longterm recovery of people with ABI. 70% of the people with ABI have some kind of limitation in daily activities, affecting their social, work, family, and emotional lives. 40% have depression as a direct consequence of their acquired condition. They are much more likely to have a severe dependency and generate unnecessary health costs. For example, each person who suffered a stroke has a cost of €27,000 per year in medical care, 70% more than a healthy person. Our solution involves providing adapted and accessible sports for individuals with Acquired Brain Injury (ABI) in their nearby sports center – creating an inclusive environment. This approach aims to enhance their quality of life, self-esteem, and physical condition, providing a significant opportunity for social inclusion. Scientific evidence supports interventions during both the subacute and chronic phases. Many neurorehabilitation centers incorporate sports programs to promote healthy habits. Sustained engagement in physical and sports activities significantly contributes to improving the physical and mental health, as well as the overall quality of life for individuals with ABI and their close circles. Engaging in physical and sports activities becomes even more crucial during the chronic phase. Introducing sports as a lifelong routine brings about improvements in physical and mental health, enhancing the quality of life for individuals with ABI and those in their immediate environment. Therefore, Ashoka has selected the Founder Marta Pérez as Ashoka Fellow in the world’s largest network of social entrepreneurs. Our researcher team are pioneer in scientifically demonstrating the benefits of sports for chronic ABI patients, and we have led six field research programs with two leading Universities (Polytechnic University of Madrid and Francisco de Vitoria) that have been published in international journals of open access.
