Mission Statement
In the villages of Kasenda and Kimya ( Uganda ) we aim to improve the situation of women by helping them achieve equality and autonomy, achieve quality education for children and ensure the minimum hygienic-sanitary conditions for a healthy development.
About This Cause
Kelele Africa, a Spanish NGO, started working in the villages of Kasenda and Kimya ( western part of Uganda ) in the summer of 2011, registering the NGO on February 2012 . It's an area of the country that has no electricity nor running water and thereby faces great obstacles for development. From the beginning, our priorities have always been the well being of women and children in that area whom we try to help through projects in education, health and skill development. Our projects : - A Sewing Workshop that has evolved through the years to become a centre of reference in the area, where students come to learn the basics of sewing skills and upon graduation, the best one is offered to work at our tailoring centre where garments are made for local demand and to bring to Spain to sell at fairs. All benefits are sent back to the project. Since 2019 we have also included an area for learning and making crafts. - A small maternity ward was built in 2013 " St Francis Health Centre" giving service to the village of Nyabweya and surroundings and soon after becoming a Health Centre giving all types of services that didn't require the service of a professional doctor. All services related to pregnancies and labour were free of charge. Kelele provided all medicines for the maternity area and payed for the salaries of all employees. However, after much deliberation and many problems with the owner of the land where the clinic was built, we have decided to help elsewhere. In June 2019 we shifted our help to a new clinic " Paul and Martha Clinic " built in the village of Kimya, where we pay the salary of the midwife and with whom we have contracted a medical insurance for all the staff and students of Kumwenya School. We shall also be collaborating with them on different outreach campaigns. - A Sponsorship Program which gives full scholarship to 335 students at all levels of education and which keeps increasing every year. - in 2015 we opened our own kindergarten and Primary school " Kumwenya Eco-school " where we offer quality education, focusing on developing creativity through many artistic activities while also prioritising the fundaments of Eco-school, teaching children respect and care for the environment. At Kumwenya School our children are exposed to a variety of enriching experiences, many of which are brought by volunteers from all over the world who come and work with us , staying from 3 weeks up to a year. We hope to shape a generation of free and well-educated youth that can be agents of change themselves and actively participate in all aspects of society. We work with values such as respect, tolerance and equality while offering them the knowledge, tools and understanding they need to be pro-active members of society in the future. - Kelele Lodge was built in 2017 with the purpose of generating income to finance part of Kumwenya School. This past year the benefits from the lodge which offers accommodation to volunteers and tourist alike, paid for 27% of all Kumwenya running expenses. - In 2020 we are opening two Vocational Training Courses for the students who finish Primary Education but can't make it into Secondary school because of poor results in their PLE exams. Both courses, Hairdressing and Tailoring with crafts will be given in the village of Kimya and supported financially by income generating enterprises created for that purpose. We expect to have 15 students in each course every year at the end of which , the graduates will receive a certificate from the Ministry of Education which will help them enter the labour market with a specific skill. -In these next three years we need to buy land and construct a High school with an area for Skill Development and Entrepreneurial classes. In this way we hope to finish the cycle of a unique education which we started with Kumwenya School. The school will be situated near the villages where we work, making it more accessible to all students from the local communities. Kelele Africa works hand in hand with its counterpart, Kelele Africa Uganda, registered as a local NGO in the country.
