Mission Statement

GREFA is a non-governmental organisation (NGO) founded in 1981 as a group for the study and conservation of nature. It is made up of people who are sensitive to certain human activities that cause the deterioration and destruction of our natural environment. The mission of this non-profit association is the protection and conservation of wildlife and their habitats, managing projects aimed at the rehabilitation and recovery of animal species and natural spaces.

About This Cause

GREFA (Grupo de Rehabilitación de la Fauna Autóctona y su Hábitat) has a huge wildlife hospital where more than 7,000 animals are treated every year, supported by a rescue team that takes care of the collection and transfer of injured or sick animals. The organisation also manages a captive breeding centre, where species such as the cinereous vulture, Bonelli's eagle, golden eagle, black stork, lesser kestrel, common kestrel, barn owl, European pond turtle, northern falcon, peregrine falcon and weasel are bred. Environmental education programmes are also carried out at the NGO's facilities, aimed at students and educational centres as well as the general public. During these visits, irrecoverable animals are shown and the causes of their injuries are explained, as well as the measures that need to be taken to prevent such cases from recurring. In the field, GREFA leads multiple projects aimed at the recovery and reinforcement of endangered species. Some of these projects have a national scope, focused on different Spanish regions, while others have an international dimension and include collaborations in countries such as Italy, Portugal, Bulgaria and Morocco, among others.
