Mission Statement
For over 25 years, driven by the challenge of making leukaemia, someday, a 100% curable disease, in the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Foundation we tirelessly impulse all kinds of projects for the benefit of patients and science.
About This Cause
In 1988, when I recovered from leukaemia, I set myself an objective: help the people who are in the same situation as I was, have more opportunities. - José Carreras Since the creation of the Foundation we have not stopped promoting and carrying out projects with one goal: that leukaemia becomes a curable disease in all cases. During the last decades cure rates have improved a lot but still today, one out of five children and one out of two adult patients remain unable to overcome the disease. Often, as you know, due to the serious side effects of treatments. As you can see in our activities, we are attacking the disease on many fronts. Our success depends in large part on the support of lots of people who work with us, UNSTOPPABLE people against leukaemia. With each research project, each small charitable contribution, and each cured patient we are expanding the opportunities for those who, sadly, suffer and will suffer through this terrible ordeal. ➡ WE WILL NOT GIVE UP UNTIL WE KNOW IT, CURE IT, AND FINALLY, AVOID IT In 2010 we created the Josep Carreras Leukaemia Research Institute (IJC), one of the few centres in the world devoted entirely to leukaemia and other haematological malignancies. The IJC wants to promote the development of research in the field of oncohaematology, accelerate the implementation of new treatments, improve care and patient survival, contribute to the training of new researchers and establish synergies with other national and international research groups. ➡ WE WILL NOT GIVE UP UNTIL WE FIND A 100% COMPATIBLE DONOR FOR ALL PATIENTS Since 1991 we manage the official bone marrow donors registry in Spain, REDMO. A transplant from an unrelated donor is the only curative treatment for a large percentage of leukaemia patients, as only one in every four patients have a compatible family member. More than 6,000 people around the world have been able to undergo a bone marrow transplant thanks to the research we do every day. ➡ WE WILL NOT GIVE UNTIL ALL PATIENTS FEEL LIKE HOME Support for the patients and families is crucial. For this reason, we have six apartments for patient’s families with low income who must travel away from home to receive treatment. Through the Ask the doctor and the medical section of our website we answer all of the questions that come up during the processes of treatment and recovery. The José Carreras Leukaemia Foundation is funded primarily through individual and corporate contributions, legacies and recitals and charity concerts of José Carreras.
