Action Against Hunger saves lives of undernourished children , with more than 35 years of expertise in emergency situations of conflict, natural disaster, and chronic food insecurity. We are at the forefront of innovation and effectiveness in combating undernutrition and in providing support to communities hard hit by humanitarian crises around the world. In 2015, the organisation assisted a total of 14.9 million people around the world . It was established in 1979 in France by a group of doctors, scientists, and writers with a unique mission: To end hunger in the world. The Nobel Prize-winning physicist Alfred Kastler served as the organisation’s first chairman. Action Against Hunger currently has headquarters in 7 countries – France, the United States, Spain, Germany, Italy, UK and Canada. Recognized as a leader in the fight against malnutrition, we save the lives of malnourished children while providing communities with access to safe water and sustainable solutions to hunger.

About This Cause

An international humanitarian organization committed to saving the lives of undernourished children. It is an organization at the head of innovation and proven effectiveness in providing communities with access to safe water and sustainable solutions to hunger, and support to communities hit hard by humanitarian crises. It is continuously evolving in response to an anticipation of a changing global landscape. Research and development represent an increasing investment for Action Against Hunger: In 2015 a total of 44 research projects were ongoing. For over 35years, it has been at the forefront of the fight against hunger worldwide, and today is a leading referent in nutrition, with an established reputation as an evidence-based organisation, capable of providing high-quality technical and operational support in even the most challenging contexts. Action Against Hunger knows undernutrition is preventable, and will do what it takes to bring humanity closer to a world without hunger. Political and social turmoil, conflict, poverty, inequality and natural disasters continue to have calamitous consequences for the world’s hungry. There is now real hope for the future. In a world where climate change and conflict will challenge even the most resilient among us, Action Against Hunger will be a global leader in advocating for resources, practices and policies that will restore the dignity and potential of people affected by hunger. Over the next 5 years, we will strengthen our organisation through the adoption of technology and enhanced collaboration around shared approaches. We will partner with academiaa and think tanks to generate new knowledge from our vast field presence. We will seek collaboration with civil society, with the private sector and with governments to strengthen our collective impact. OUR MISSION: is to save lives by eliminating hunger through the prevention, detection and treatment of undernutrition. We tackle the consequences and address the underlying causes of hunger. Independence: we act according to our own principles in order to maintain our moral and financial independence. Neutrality: we maintain strict political and religious neutrality. Nevertheless, we can denounce human rights violations it witnesses as well as obstacles put in the way of its humanitarian activities. Non-discrimination: we reject discrimination based on ethnicity, nationality, opinion, race, religion, sex or social class. Free and direct access to people: we demand free access to victims and direct control of its programs. Professionalism: To maximize our efficiency and use of resources, we base the assessment, conception, management and realization of our programs on the highest professional standards and years of experience. Transparency: we are committed to respecting a policy of transparency and disclosure for our beneficiaries, donors and partners by making available all information on the allocation and management of funds, and by providing independent verification of a good management. All our headquarters as well as our field mission’s accounts are audited externally every year to ensure that we are effectively using the funds entrusted to us. Our approach is oriented to have a long term, sustainable and significant impact on undernutrition while promoting a multi-sectoral preventative approach and an effective curative service at scale. We are the lead organisation to shape emerging initiative to scale-up Child Undernutrition management services. Research and analysis is our primary means of assessing and improving the efficiency, effectiveness and sustainability of our interventions; delivering quality results at-scale; and, better responding to beneficiary needs and vulnerabilities, especially in times of crisis. In short, research is critical to our work and continued success. Our work is quality focused. To be excellent, we focus our research and technical efforts to optimize the impact and effectiveness of all interventions. It is a continuously adapting and learning process, looking for new opportunities, processes or tools & techniques that support local capacities to change undernutrition and hunger. In 2015 a total of 44 research projects were ongoing , grouped by the organisation’s sectors of intervention: Disaster Risk Management, Food Security and Livelihoods, Nutrition and Health, Mental Health and Care Practices, and Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. Several projects involved different sectors, a testament to the degree of collaboration within the organisation that highlights the importance of multi-sectoral integration. As an international organisation, we are continuously evolving in response to and anticipation of a changing global landscape. Political and social turmoil, conflict, poverty, inequality and natural disasters continue to have calamitous consequences for the world’s hungry. Today, an estimated 50 million children under 5 suffer still from acute undernutrition, the most life-threatening form of hunger, and 159 million from chronic undernutrition, which occurs over time. Our theory of change is an overarching guide for how we contribute to a world without hunger. We believe 4 approaches are fundamental to ensure we are at the forefront of making change in the lives of those affected by hunger. It is how we believe our programmes will make a difference. There is now real hope for the future. We know that hunger and undernutrition are preventable. In a world where climate change and conflict will challenge even the most resilient among us, Action Against Hunger will be a global leader in advocating for resources, practices and policies that will restore the dignity and potential of people affected by hunger.
