Mission Statement
Our mission is to relieve the worst effects of forced migration. We envision a society that greets forcibly displaced people with dignity and humanity.
About This Cause
We provide dignified emergency relief and psychosocial support to refugees and asylum seekers in Greece. Our participatory approach responds flexibly to the evolving needs of people experiencing forced displacement, with a focus on children and youth. Lighthouse Relief is a nonprofit humanitarian organisation registered in Sweden and in Greece with no political or religious affiliation. We rely on the generosity of individual donors and grants from private philanthropic institutions to fund our work. Our progammatic pillars: 1) Psychosocial Support We offer opportunities for young refugees living in camps to relieve stress and regain a semblance of normalcy through recreational and educational activities as well as informal counselling. As safe spaces to socialize, play, and learn, our cluster of cheerfully decorated ISO containers in the Ritsona refugee camp provides a place where children can be children and young people can escape the boredom of camp life. 2) Emergency Response Approximately 100,000 asylum seekers in Greece currently have no form of supported accommodation and struggle to access housing, medical care, and cover their basic needs. We strive to meet their material needs, provide consultations with social workers, and serve as the “missing link” to other service providers who can give housing, legal and other forms of support. 3) Advocacy We bear witness to and document the increasingly hostile policies affecting forcibly displaced people in Greece. From difficulties applying for asylum to rollbacks of food provision and cash assistance to shutting down housing programs, asylum seekers face mounting obstacles to securing international protection and rebuilding their lives in Greece. We raise awareness about the injustices they endure and advocate for more humane policies in line with international law and fundamental human rights. Participatory Approach Our approach to humanitarian relief responds flexibly to the evolving needs of people experiencing displacement. We make it a priority to listen to people from the communities we support and encourage them to be equal partners in our activities. Community Volunteers - Volunteers with lived experience as refugees or asylum seekers are an integral part of the Lighthouse team. Working alongside staff, they assist with psychosocial support activities, monthly distributions of basic necessities to families, and enhance our advocacy, storytelling and communications with their design, language, and other skills. We support them through supermarket vouchers, training and capacity-building opportunities, and other ways that we hope will continue to serve them well in the future.
