Mission Statement
A bright future for women and their communities. We initiate and support projects with local partners to create equal opportunities for women. Through our 3 pillars LEARN, LIGHT & LEAD: We provide midwifery scholarships to young women from rural areas of Ethiopia. We install and maintain solar systems in rural and remote health centers for power, light and solar fridges in maternity wards. We support graduate midwives with leadership and professional training as well as career development through our Holistic Community Programs as midwife mentors with responsibility for 3 health centres, providing free ultrasound services, managing outreach programs and supporting local midwives.
About This Cause
We are a Swiss based charity, registered with ZEWO the Swiss charity standard and Zürich Stadt Behandlungs Registrar as a not-for-profit organisation. We were founded in 2012 by a group of Swedish friends and mothers who wanted to give back, they were inspired by the story and success of Dr Catherine Hamlin treating fistula patients in Ethiopia. They decided to support the prevention strategy of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia by initially supporting 4 year BSc midwife scholarships. The organisation has developed and grown, with over 60 graduate midwives and 300 solar systems installed by 2024, serving a population of over 7 million and supported over 700,000 births. We work collaboratively with partners in Ethiopia to deliver our programs. Our key partners include: LeDeg College of Midiwves in Addis Ababa, Solar Energy Foundation and WEEMA International. Our projects are designed based on these values and aims: Identified Needs based programming, Systemic & sustainable change, Local capacity building, Partnerships, Sustainability, Accountability, Transparency and a Commitment to long-term solutions. Agile and Adaptable organisation. This has developed into a strategy to improve rural maternal health services including: Learn - Midwifery Scholarships Light - Light 4 Lfie- Solar light, power and fridges in delivery wards Light - Sustainability Program - Maintenance and Supervision of Solar Installations Lead - Graduate midwive's continuous professional development (CPD) Holistic Community Programs - based on a Woreda or district we apply all 3 programs: we offer midwifery scholarships to local high school graduates who are passionate about change in thier community, improving maternal health and becoming a midwife. We install solar systems and fridges as well as upgrading maternity waiting rooms and delivery wards to ensure mothers have a safe and secure place to stay as well as quality environment to give birth. We employ a midwife mentor who is responsible for supporting 3 health centers, she provides free ultrasound services, manages outreach programs as well as supporting and training diploma midwives in maternal and newborn care. This program has reduced maternal mortality rates to European levels, "an Ethiopian woman in a rural area is 80 times more likely to die in childbirth" We are a voluntary working Board of 8-10 people, we employ an office manager in Switzerland, a project coordinator and a project consultant in Ethiopia.
