About This Cause

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and other situations of violence and to provide them with assistance. The ICRC responds to humanitarian needs worldwide through its network of delegations and as part of the wider International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Established in 1863, its mandate stems essentially from the Geneva Conventions of 1949. It is based in Geneva, Switzerland, and employs over 20,000 people in more than 100 countries. The ICRC is funded mainly by voluntary donations from governments, supranational organizations, National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and private sector audiences.
