Mission Statement

FED Summary Mission: To Empower Burmese Migrants and their families in Thailand to achieve greater recognition of their rights by providing education, social services, and advocacy. The Foundation for Education and Development (FED) is dedicated to defending the rights of Myanmar migrants in Thailand through advocacy, education, and social services. Founded in 2000 as a grassroots group along the Myanmar-Thai border, FED relocated to southern Thailand shortly after the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami to provide emergency assistance to disaster-affected Myanmar migrants whose needs had been largely ignored by the Thai government and the international community. More than a decade later, FED continues to bridge the gap between migrant communities and social inclusion in Thailand. FED’s three main programs: Migrant Education, Migrant Health, and Migrant Development are designed to provide the comprehensive support and advocacy necessary to empower migrants to turn their rights into realities. We aim to achieve our mission by carrying out the following 3 objectives: 1. Empower Burmese migrant workers to obtain their rights to access Thai health care as well as providing health education and basic first aid services. 2. Burmese migrant workers obtain equal human rights and secure environment for inclusive development in Thailand 3. Marginalized Burmese migrant children obtain access to educational opportunities in Thailand.

About This Cause

OUR PROGRAMS Our programs are focused on our most important objectives: providing education and a safe environment for Burmese children, supporting and developing the Burmese migrant community, and providing health care and training to Burmese Migrant Families. Education Program: Migrant children are often deprived of their right to education due to their family’s unawareness of their legal right to attend Thai schools. Once informed of this right, barriers such as fear of discrimination, fear of losing cultural identity, family financial difficulties, and lack of Thai language skills prevent children from accessing education opportunities. This results in migrant children going unschooled or falling victim to child labor. In response, FED has created several education options to meet the varying needs of migrant children and youth. Migrant Learning Centers: Two learning centers, with an average enrollment of 400 children in each year, provide primary-level education according to the Myanmar Ministry of Education’s curriculum standards as well as intensive Thai language courses to equip students to succeed in Thai society. Thai School Integration: Migrant children achieving proficient Thai language skills are supported by FED to enroll into 40 partner Thai schools. Average 200 migrant students are assisted in this capacity. Non-Formal Education: Weekend courses in Thai, English and IT are offered for migrant out-of-school youth to prepare participants to join the Thai non-formal education system and achieve an officially recognized Thai education certificate. Value-adding activities to enhance the educational experience of migrant children include a school bank project to teach money management skills and a safe school project to ensure facilities, staff, and students are prepared for unpredictable natural disasters. Migrant Development Program: The Migrant Development team (MDT) works tirelessly to educate and empower the Myanmar migrant community to achieve full recognition of their human and labor rights. To do this effectively, FED has trained a network of over 200 migrant community leaders across 10 Thai provinces with the skills to identify and report rights violations against migrants. FED remains in close contact with this network, relying on members to report rights violation cases, disseminate migrant rights news, and aid in arranging community training and events. This strategy has allowed FED to provide migrants legal aid assistance, train migrants about gender-related issues and disseminate of migrant rights educational material. Health Program: Migrants in Thailand continue to face challenges accessing health services in Thailand. Lack of language skills, poverty, no legal documentation, and limited basic health knowledge prevent migrants from achieving their right to essential healthcare services and improve living standards. The FED Health team provides education and outreach through training, home visits, and medical check-ups in migrant communities and learning centers in an attempt to raise health awareness. In addition, FED connects migrants to Thai health services by offering emergency transportation, Thai to Burmese translation at hospitals, and assisting migrants to register for Thai health insurance opportunities. The program directly impacts migrants in Phang Nga province.
