About This Cause
ARK Kuşadası is a busy town on Turkey’s Aegean coast. The winter population is about 110,000 but in summer this swells to well over one million as families leave the cities for their summer homes, foreigners flock to their holiday homes, tourists pack the hotels and seasonal workers flock to cater for them. There is an abundance of food which attracts homeless animals from the surrounding areas and the well-fed cats and dogs breed prolifically. Many summer visitors bring their pets with them, some of them escape and become lost, others adopt cute pups and kittens then abandon them at the end of summer. The town sits astride the main route from the regional airport to coastal resorts further south and the volume of local traffic is very high. Many animals become traffic casualties and the concentration of animals together results in fighting for food and outbreaks of diseases such as distemper and parvo. In winter the tourists and summer residents leave, many hotels and restaurants close and life becomes very hard for the homeless animals. In February 2018 Ann Kennedy was granted Turkish citizenship and this prompted her to try to fulfil a dream – to form a charity to help the street animals (at that time foreigners were unable to do so). She got together with like minded friends from England, Ireland, Holland and Turkey and ARK was born. ARK was granted legal status as a dernek (association) in April 2018. The status of dernek allows ARK to collect money and to spend it in accordance with Turkish law and the set of rules given to it on its incorporation. It does not confer any special privileges or tax exemptions. ARK is governed under Turkish law by a board of ten directors and four auditors who are elected by a general meeting of registered members. The day to day management is in the hands of the Executive Committee of five Directors. Members and other volunteers take part in such activities as caring for animals after treatment or surgery, providing transport, helping in the municipal shelter, feeding street animals and fund raising. In a normal month ARK provides veterinary care or other interventions for around 100 animals, including neutering, foster care, post treatment convalescing patients and motherless babies and provides additional food and care for animals in the shelter. We also have an educational programme to raise awareness of the needs of homeless animals and how to help them. The local authority has produced a video of our members at work, to recognise ARK and to try to encourage others to follow our example. You can follow our activities on our website - arktr.org
