About This Cause

ABOUT THE EDUCATIONAL VOLUNTEERS FOUNDATION OF TURKEY (TEGV) The Educational Volunteers Foundation of Turkey (TEGV) was founded January 23, 1995, under the leadership of a Board of trustees, comprised of prominent businessmen, academicians and philanthropists. The founders believed that lack of education was the basis of many of Turkey’s problems, and that it would not possible to maintain contemporary and civil society in Turkey without addressing this issue first. TEGV quickly became the most widespread non-governmental organization in the area of education in Turkey. TEGV’s objective is to create and implement educational programs for children aged 6-14 to support their academic and character development. TEGV is the most wide spread education nonprofit in Turkey and have a protocol with the Ministry of National Education. Since 1995, TEGV has worked with over 90,000 volunteers to deliver quality educational programs to 3 million children in Turkey. With volunteer support, TEGV provides long term and short term education programs in the areas of Coding, Literacy, Art, Math, Science, Physical Education, English to approximately 190.000 kids each year. TEGV's goal is to support the educational system in Turkey and respond to strategic priorities put forward by the Ministry of National Education, including Provincial Directorates. Education has been one of Turkey’s main challenges throughout its history. TEGV is concerned by the fact that millions of children lacked qualified education. At TEGV, we work with children in a loving, cheerful and enthusiastic environment. All TEGV locations are situated in disadvantaged areas of Turkey, as indicated by socio-economic levels, employment rates, family size, education levels, quality of public schools, availability of social services, etc. TEGV has 55 locations, including education parks, learning units and mobile firefly learning units are situated in disadvantaged areas of Turkey. Though, TEGV is able to reach many children through its fixed activity locations (physical buildings owned or rented by TEGV), there are still many more children that are not able to access our services in this way. These children live in even more disadvantaged regions than where our activity locations exist, in areas of the country too remote, or too underdeveloped, for TEGV to be able to open a fixed location. This is where our Firefly program comes in. In locations where we do not have permanent structures, we have Firefly Learning Units set up in truck trailers to reach out to children. We have a total of 20 Fireflies, of which 15 are standard and 5 are thematic. The five are Art, Maker, Science- and Traffic themed Fireflies each have one education area designed with appropriate equipment for their specific theme, serving approximately 1,500 children each year. Our standard Fireflies, on the other hand, feature an Information and Technology Room and a Free Activity Room, serving approximately 2,300 children every year. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, all activity locations of TEGV have been closed. As TEGV, since the beginning of the pandemic process, we have been delivering our education to our children through our free and qualified distance education platform called TEGV Digital. TEGV Digital is comprised of long-term education programs (18 hrs) in the areas of Math, Science, Reading, Art, Algorithm, and English language. Children can choose and participate in the programs they interested in. We need your valuable donations to achieve our goals and provide educational support to more children.
