About This Cause
Serving Lives Under Marginalization (SLUM) is a women-led community-based organization based in Wakiso District, Uganda. Established in 2015, SLUM has grown from a team of four to a dedicated team of 20, working to empower adolescent girls and young women in their community. The organization strives to create a society where girls and women can access and utilize sexual and reproductive health services in a rights-based and supportive environment. SLUM addresses critical issues such as gender-based violence, health inequities, and economic vulnerability among adolescent girls and young women. Its drop-in center provides essential HIV prevention and treatment services, including counseling, testing, and antiretroviral therapy. In 2022 and 2023, SLUM enrolled 889 eligible clients in PrEP programs, significantly contributing to HIV prevention. With peer-led initiatives and a toll-free helpline, the organization ensures that sexual and reproductive health services are accessible and inclusive. Recognizing the broader challenges faced by its beneficiaries, SLUM also focuses on economic empowerment and mental well-being. The organization has established six community safe spaces in areas like Kazo Central I, Lugoba II, and Muganzirwaza, benefiting over 370 adolescent girls. These spaces provide life skills training, economic support, and psychosocial services. Additionally, SLUM implements savings groups and vocational training programs to promote financial independence among young women.
