Mission Statement
To ensure that the marginalized and vulnerable in our world have access to the fundamental basic needs of life such as adequate shelter, food, water, sanitation, healthcare, education and economic opportunities.
About This Cause
Kawempe Health and Education Initiative (KHEI) is a registered LGBTQ+ founded and led Not for Profit Organization established in 2017 to advocate for, promote and protect the human rights, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) as well as the livelihood of Men who have sex with Men, Trans and Queer sex workers in Uganda. KHEI has a well-established peer network of LGBTQ+ community members in over 7 districts and 3 regions of Uganda providing services to over 1000 community members. We are committed to advocating for the health and human rights of the LGBTQ+ community, other key and priority populations as well as the other marginalized and vulnerable groups in Uganda. This is done by increased demand for access to friendly health services and rights, advocating for a conducive environment, favorable laws and friendly policies, accelerated demand for HIV/AIDS prevention, enrollment and retention on care services, sexual and reproductive health rights as well as an economically empowered MSM community in Uganda. At management level, we have a dedicated team of professionals rich in diversity; from identity to professions, ranging from management, finance, Information technology and public relations among others. At program level, KHEI has since 2017 been active in community mobilization for HIV prevention and treatment services, advocating for the Sexual Reproductive Health Rights of sexual minorities (men who have sex with men, male sex workers and trans among others), advocating for the use of technology to solve community challenges as well as strengthening organizational systems to become more effective, efficient and resilient in a hostile and challenging working environment. We have through our “skills for freedom” program successfully trained 40 members (MSM and trans) in modern welding and metal fabrication and 30 in website designing using Word Press and have another 10 members currently learning database designing. Over the last five years, we have conducted twelve (12) dialogue meetings with the local leaders and law enforcement agencies which had until mid-2022 led to reduced harassment and arbitrary arrests members. We are training members in website designing which should help them get the necessary skills to compete in the labor market. In a gesture of togetherness, KHEI has so far supported the renovation of 3 schools in the Eastern (1), Western (1) and Central (1) part of the country providing over 4000 school going children with a clean learning environment and clean rain water harvesting systems. KHEI is now in 2024 planning to start a business incubation center for the members rained in ICT courses to create a business-oriented LGBTQ+ community equipped with skills and knowledge to start, manage and maintain their own businesses. We also welcome well-wishers that are able to propose to us technology innovations and solutions that can help our community in Uganda to stay safe while receiving services from friendly service providers. Donors and volunteers are very welcome to support our cause.
