About This Cause

Back in 1998, a number of NCI’s pediatric oncologists along with Society’s renowned businessmen and charitable women of the Society established what was then called the Association of Friends of the National Cancer Institute, AFNCI, as a non-profit organization committed to improving the lives of cancer patients at the NCI through facility development, upgrade and healthcare staff training. The association played an essential role in improving the health outcome of children with cancer at the NCI. The Children’s Cancer Hospital Egypt 57357 was the most important project that AFNCI initiated and developed. It is the largest children’s cancer treatment center in the world in terms of capacity. It is not just a Hospital, but a model of change and a comprehensive institution that is fight pediatric cancer by offering free high quality medical care to all patients without discrimination. In 2014 the NCI’s new out-patient clinics were opened to the public. The clinics were a gift from AFNCI and Egypt Cancer Network, ECN. The Association built and equipped the clinics to serve 1600 patients per day, and alleviate the burden on NCI’s main building. Moreover, AFNCI is still supporting the clinics to ensure they continue providing high quality service that cancer patients deserve and as such contributing to giving them better chances of recovery,AFNCI is committed to offering continuous support by providing for medication, maintenance expenses and affording security, administration and cleaning teams’ expenses. Handing out school bags initiative This program aims to fight the cancer of poverty, ignorance and sickness in the neediest schools. The Association hands out school bags with its content of stationary items in addition to health awareness booklets and a box containing dry food products to students in the neediest schools in all of Egypt’s governorates. This is done through organizing campaigns to visit needy schools, in order to offer students a better chance to receive education and give them their basic needs. Two hundred and thirteen thousand school bags and eighty thousand food products boxes have already been handed out in different governorates. Developing 100 poor villages in Egypt's governorates The project started in April 2017, after signing a cooperation protocol between the association and the Holding Company for Drinking Water and Wastewater, to finance the connection of home connections to 94 villages, which are the villages in which the main connections and pumping stations were financed by our brothers in the Emirates. Since then, work has been ongoing, as the implementation of home sewage connections has actually been completed in the governorates of Sohag (Qalfaw Village - Al-Salaa Village - Nagaa Al-Khatib) and Minya (Awlad Al-Sheikh Ali - Kafr Mahdi - Sanjarj - Ma'sara Mallawi - South Mallawi), at a cost of 22 million pounds borne by the association Drinking Water Projects The association established a mobile drinking water station with a capacity of 30 liters per second to serve 50,000 people in the villages of Abu Diab East and West and 22 hamlets and estates in the Dishna Center, Qena Governorate. The works include: Civil works. Mechanical works, pumps and valves. Electrical works. The total cost of the project is 30 million pounds. The opening took place in August 2020 in the presence of Major General Ashraf Gharib Al-Dawady, Governor of Qena, Engineer Mamdouh Raslan, Chairman of the Holding Company for Drinking Water and Sanitation, and Brigadier Engineer Mohamed Galal Abdel Fattah, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Qena Drinking Water and Sanitation Company. The opening took place in the presence of a large number of media outlets that covered the event. Participating in the State’s initiative for eliminating hepatitis viruses Along with charity partners, companies and different institutions, AFNCI conducts hepatitis viruses screening for their employees for minimum cost in order to declare these institutions free of virus C while using the revenue to conduct screening in villages and needy areas for free. Spreading clinical pharmacy practice in Egypt’s hospitals initiative This program aims to transfer Hospital 57357’s distinct experience in clinical pharmacy to all of Egypt’s hospitals. In cooperation with the Children’s Cancer Hospital, 57357, the Association sponsors the establishment of clinical pharmacy practice in Egypt’s hospitals with respect to construction works, equipment, and doctors training as well as follow up provision for one year. This would lead to preventing waste in medications, accordingly increase the quantities of medications prepared and preparing intravenous medications in a sterilized environment which leads to enhancing the services provided to cancer patients in Egypt. The Association has already sponsored the establishment of clinical pharmacy in Ismailia Tumor Hospital and Ahmed Maher Hospital, and work is in progress in other hospitals. Supporting international fellowships and accreditation certificates The Association believes in the importance of preparing specialized and well trained generations of doctors and healthcare professional in order to upgrade the level of care provided to cancer patients. Hence it supports training and fellowship programs with national and international institutions such as the fellowship program between Dana Farber Boston Children’s, USA and 57357. It is also sponsoring nurses training programs through a cooperation protocol between the Ministry of Health and 57357. These projects help us to reach our goal of developing quality healthcare in Egypt. “Home without cancer” awareness initiative The Association is eager to support awareness programs about cancer and its causes and other diseases to reduce incidence rates. As such the Association sponsored the “home without cancer” campaign through the creation of a website carrying the same title. The website which is a collaborative initiative by AFNCI, 57357 and Egypt Cancer Network, ECN, provides health awareness and medical information to cancer patients. It also provides healthy living guidelines for cancer prevention and its early detection signs. Regarding AFNCI’s development of blood transfusion service in the NCI Since AFNCI took over the responsibility of affording safe, free, blood for cancer patients, it could meet all the institute’s needs of blood, and 50% of its needs of platelets. AFNCI could guaranty high quality safe blood, and eliminate the professional blood sellers’ phenomenon. Statistics for the number of campaigns and blood bags collected from 1999 to the end of 2019 Number of blood bags is more than 400000 Work is ongoing in the area of health, awareness raising ,Scientific research and community development
