Mission Statement
1. Offer high quality, free-of-charge medical services primarily to patients from Egypt and the region, particularly the underprivileged. 2. Train a generation of young doctors, scientists, nurses and technicians at the highest international standards from Egypt and beyond. 3. Advance basic science and applied research as an integral component of the programme.
About This Cause
Through the Aswan Heart Centre and future Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Centre in Cairo, we support improved comprehensive, advanced cardiac care that is available to all people in need, free of charge – dramatically changing the health outcomes of the most vulnerable, particularly children, in Egypt and the broader Middle East and Africa. We strive to challenge ourselves not only to maintain our high standard of excellence, but also to constantly push ourselves forward to achieve new goals. The prevalence of cardiovascular disease is a growing challenge in Egypt, the MENA region and Africa. It is by far the highest cause of death for non-communicable diseases, resulting in an estimated 1.5 million deaths annually across the African continent. Most of these deaths are entirely preventable if adequate facilities and well-trained medical staff were more readily available. The Aswan Heart Centre (AHC) is one of the few cardiac centres in the region recognised internationally as a centre of excellence for the treatment and research of cardiovascular disease. Doctors at the AHC perform approximately 4,000 surgical and cardiac procedures annually, 60% of which are offered to children including neonates, with priority given to critical cases. In addition to that, the centre provides comprehensive, first-rate trainings to doctors, nurses, researchers and technicians. The research department is integrated with the clinical services and includes population science, transnational and basic science research with a constant emphasis on innovation. However, due to the ever-increasing demand, we are able to address only a small number of all the complex and critical cases we receive. To improve access to care and meet the demand for cardiac care within Egypt, the Board of Magdi Yacoub Heart Foundation (MYF) has decided to develop the Magdi Yacoub Global Heart Centre, located in Cairo. Facilities will allow us to treat up to 12,000 patients per year, a three-fold increase on our current capacity.
