Mission Statement
The Oxygen Therapy Centre provides High Dose Oxygen Therapy and Electromagnetic Therapy to help improve the quality of life and wellbeing of people suffering from neurological and physical conditions such as, Multiple Sclerosis, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (M.E), Stroke, Parkinson's, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Asthma, Leg Ulcers, Migraine, Angina, Fibromyalgia, Cerebral Palsy,Sports Injuries, Post Operative Healing, to name but a few. Oxygen Therapy is used as an adjunct therapy when Cancer patients are having Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy.
About This Cause
The Oxygen Therapy Centre was established in June 1992. It was set up by a group of volunteers to initially treat Multiple Sclerosis using High Dosage Oxygen Therapy (simply 100% pure medical oxygen) delivered to the sufferer within a pressurised chamber. By treating MS and other neurological conditions with this remarkable therapy it was clinically proven to halt the progression of this disease, thus enabling the sufferer to live a better quality of life. Over the years it has steadily progressed to treat sufferers of other neurological/physical conditions such as Stroke, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Parkinson’s, Cerebral Palsy, Post-Operative Healing, Sports Injuries, Asthma and can be used in conjunction with conventional medical treatments. Everyone is provided with a mask, mouthpiece or clear hood to wear which they inhale 100% pure oxygen through. A qualified operator and one assistant are in attendance throughout each 90 minute session. By inhaling pure oxygen under pressure, patients can increase the concentration of oxygen in their blood, so that it's more efficiently delivered to where it is needed most. Oxygen is dissolved into all body fluids, the plasma, the central nervous system, the lymph area and the bones, and can be carried to areas where circulation is diminished or blocked. Oxygen is dissolved in the blood and transported, in combination with haemoglobin in the red blood cells throughout the body. This dissolved oxygen passes into the tissues. Breathing high levels of oxygen under pressure causes greater uptake of oxygen by the bodily fluids and so more can reach areas where the circulation is diminished or blocked and therefore improve recovery. The extra oxygen has additional benefits as it greatly enhances the ability of white blood cells to kill bacteria. It also reduces swelling and allows new blood vessels to grow more rapidly into the affected areas. The Centre works under the guidance from both Medical and Technical Advisers who liaise with Centres throughout Great Britain. It is approved under the Care Standard Legislation in England and Wales and is available on the NHS there but unfortunately not here in Northern Ireland yet! The treatment is offered with the knowledge off the clients G.P. Since April 2010 we have been providing Electromagnetic Stimulation to help with the healing of neurological/physical conditions. This therapy works well alongside Oxygen Therapy, it improves the way your body works. It makes the biological processes more effective, for example, it enhances the circulation of your blood to all parts of the body. The Centre offers so much more than the medical therapy provided, it has become a social focal point where individuals suffering from debilitating conditions can converse with each other, they will share their highs and unburden their lows amongst others who are in similar circumstances or indeed have endured comparable experiences and can relate to them. This is a therapy in itself. The Centre is run by a dedicated team of volunteers working tirelessly to raise the necessary funds to ensure this important treatment facility remains operational until such times as it may be offered on the NHS here in NI. As a Charity we cannot charge for the therapy but we do ask the patients to make a donation towards their treatment. As a self funding, non profit making organisation the hard work is ongoing because we do not receive any Government assistance. But because of the difference the Centre makes everyone involved here experiences the same worthwhile satisfaction, knowing that they are improving the quality of the lives of so many people. The volunteers give freely of their time and talents even though they may have no need for the treatment themselves.
