Mission Statement

Camphill Communities Trust (NI) provides places for sharing life and work where others strive to build fully inclusive Camphill Communities. The Camphill ethos is that of community life where, according to ability, each person contributes towards the well-being of the community as a whole and of all its members.

About This Cause

In Camphill Communities residents, co-workers and their families live and work alongside each other sharing personal joys and sorrows, disappointments and achievements, fears and dreams together throughout the year. Based around personal expression, Camphill Communities NI offers a life full of celebration and the joy of accomplishment to adults and children with learning disabilities, mental health problems, and other support needs. The communities are formed in such a way that the members, whatever their abilities, can help to support the needs of their fellows, while they themselves are supported in turn. There are four Camphill Communities in Northern Ireland: - Camphill Glencraig (Craigavad) - Camphill Holywood - Camphill Clanabogan (near Omagh) - Camphill Mourne Grange (near Kilkeel) Clanabogan Community, established in 1984, and Mourne Grange Community, established in 1971, reside in peaceful rural settings providing a unique living and working environment. The two Communities between them are home for 80 vulnerable adults in a shared living context where residents and co-workers and their children live and work alongside each other. Camphill aims to foster everyday life in as normal a way as possible; holidays and birthdays, Christmas and Easter, summer and harvest, all the high points of the year are shared, together. Camphill Glencraig, established in 1954, is a similar community to Mourne Grange and Clanabogan but also has the only residential school in Northern Ireland which meets the holistic needs of children with learning disabilities. Support and education is tailored to the age, ability and individual needs, some of which are extremely complex. Independence, participation and inclusion are encouraged within all aspects of school and community life at Glencraig. Camphill Holywood was established in 1997 and is unique in Camphill Northern Ireland as it is a town community. It is based around an organic bakery, coffee shop and food store and has two houses that provide accommodation for a total of 5 adults with learning disabilities. As with the other communities, residents share the house with several volunteer co-workers. Camphill Communities Trust (NI) provides the Communities with the use of land and purpose-built housing, educational facilities, woodwork, weavery and bakery workshops, social and recreational spaces and sustainable gardens and farms. The intention is to give residents, young and old, a safe and peaceful outlet to unearth hidden talents and fulfil personal aspirations. Residents and co-workers work within the workshops, garden or farm as their profession, producing food and products for the Community and for sale to the wider community via specific existing retail outlets. The Trust also provides a range of advice and support to the Communities across the areas of planning, service provision/development, finance and training. Co-workers choose to do their work not as a job, but as a way of life, with social rather than personal values taking priority. In 1995 the Camphill Social Fund (NI) was established to support those who are or have been Camphill co-workers. Financial support can be provided or funding for care, nursing, accommodation, medical or other treatments. The Fund can also make provision for the support of the next of kin in a comparable manner. Provision is also available for the immediate needs of co-workers required to leave Camphill and begin a new life elsewhere.
