Mission Statement
Established in 1984, The Maya Centre is a community-based charity in Islington providing free mental health and wellbeing services to women on low incomes. Our vision is a world where all women can prioritise their mental health and wellbeing, safe from abuse, exclusion or discrimination. Our mission is to build a safe and inclusive women-for-women community in which we: - Support recovery from depression, trauma and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG) with a focus on building trust, resilience and voice - Flex to meet women’s different needs by offering therapy, as individuals, in groups, face-to-face or remotely - Prioritise intercultural and intersectional approaches via tailored and targeted support in community languages and for specific, minoritised cultural groups - Seek to influence best practice in women’s mental health and wellbeing across our local community
About This Cause
The Maya Centre (TMC) is a women-for-women charity based in Islington North London, offering free counselling and holistic support to minoritised women on low incomes, whose mental health and wellbeing have been affected by experiences including deprivation and isolation, racism, exploitation and Violence Against Women and Girls (VAWG). 75% of our clients come from Global Majority, migrant or refugee backgrounds and we adopt specifically intercultural and intersectional approaches in supporting them towards greater voice, choice and control in their lives. We have recently developed our services to offer more inclusive and accessible support which helps women to identify needs early on, enhance their resilience and support networks, influence our direction of travel and develop their leadership skills. Offered in over 14 languages, our services include: - One-to-one specialist BACP-accredited counselling with qualified staff (6-24 weeks) - One-to-one and group art therapy (12-20 weeks) - Psychoeducation in community languages (6-week courses) - Targeted support: Irish Women’s and Black Women's Projects, Somali and Turkish Women's Groups - Mind-Body Therapies for trauma including Reiki, Reflexology and Holistic Massage - Community development activities under our Women's Hub including signposting & advocacy; targeted peer support groups; co-designed wellbeing workshops; a Leader group using Experts by Experience with routes through to Board representation and decision-making.
