Mission Statement
To provide a leading programme of education, life skills, work preparation and opportunities for work to adults with learning disabilities, giving them the skills to realise their potential.
About This Cause
MK SNAP is a passionate, dynamic and growing local charity. MK SNAP was set up by parents who found no services suitable for their children with learning disabilities once they had left their education provision. Thirty years later MK SNAP delivers a leading programme of person-centred education, life skills, work preparation and opportunities for work adults with learning difficulties giving them the skills to be as independent as they can be and live fulfilling and rewarding lives. Independent lives means different things for different people from having the confidence and skills to manage money, shop and cook, to move from the family home into supported living, or to work either paid or voluntary in the community. Our extensive range of subjects, delivered in over 50 sessions each week, covers three main themes to meet this objective. 1. Life-skills (numeracy, literacy, communication, relationships, IT and internet safety, road safety, budgeting, cooking, meal planning and personal hygiene. 2. Health and well-being (yoga and meditation, indoor and outdoor physical activities, including walks in nature, gardening, music, dance and performing arts). 3. SNAP Enterprise provides skill-building, training and work experience in five areas assembly and packing, community café and catering, canvas art and handmade gifts and horticulture. SNAP Enterprise increases opportunities to enter the world of work or volunteering outside of SNAP. SNAP Enterprise raises awareness of what people with learning disabilities ‘can do’. Income from assembly and packing contracts and sales provide additional income for the charity. We believe the more opportunities that are provided the more likely it will be for learners to find their niche and flourish building skills for independence, confidence and self-esteem, providing greater opportunities and quality of life.
