Mission Statement

YoungMinds champion children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing across the UK. Driven by their experiences we create change so that children and young people can cope with life’s adversities, find help when needed and succeed in life.

About This Cause

1 in 10 children and young people, an average of 3 in every classroom, suffer from a diagnosable mental illness such as depression, eating disorders or anxiety but thousands of these young people are not receiving the support they need. Despite 75% of enduring mental health problems beginning before the age of 18, only 0.7% of the NHS budget is specifically allocated to children and young people’s mental health services. Services are unable to cope with the demand; on average specialist mental health services are turning away nearly 25% of young people referred to them for treatment. Early intervention is vital to improve immediate and long term mental health, and to prevent children suffering further disadvantages including bullying, isolation, low self-esteem, being twice as likely to have difficulties in reading, spelling, mathematics and more likely to leave school without qualifications, and a reduced life expectancy of up to 20 years. That’s why the work of YoungMinds is more important than ever before. Founded in 1993, YoungMinds champion children and young people’s mental health and wellbeing across the UK. Driven by their experiences, we create change so that children and young people can cope with life’s adversities, find help when needed and succeed in life. We do this by working with young people, parents and professionals, including giving expert advice and knowledge about mental health through the following services: • Parents’ Helpline – a trusted free and confidential telephone and email service that helps over 12,750 families a year who are worried about the behaviour and wellbeing of a child or young person under 25. We provide reassurance, information and practical guidance, and for callers who need more help we also offer a further free 50 minute phone consultation with a qualified mental health professional, such as a child psychologist. • YoungMinds online – we know that in the first instance most young people will look for help online and so our free online resources are an incredibly important source of advice and support. YoungMinds website provides mental health help and advice to 1.5 million people every year. • Youth engagement – our national young activist network helps young people aged 14-25 to talk openly about mental health and raise awareness online and in their communities, changing attitudes and improving services for young people. For many of the young people involved, working with YoungMinds enables them to turn their experiences of mental ill health into something positive and they have told us that the experience is life changing. • Training and consultancy – we are the go-to trainers for children and young people’s mental health and train over 8,000 professionals across the country, including teachers, foster carers, and medical professionals. • Campaigns and Media – we’re reducing the stigma associated with mental health by putting it in the news every day, and campaigning with young people to change attitudes and services so we can improve the lives of thousands of young people in the future. In 2016 we won a Liberty Human Rights Award for our #lifeontheweb campaign. Our 2016-2020 key objectives are to: • Foster innovation that will address the needs of vulnerable and excluded children and young people • Promote good mental health for more children and young people than ever before • Champion the voices of young people and parents to influence mental health policy and practice • Inspire excellence to achieve transformed, integrated service.
