Mission Statement
St Michael’s Fellowship secures the best possible future for children by working directly with parents. Families we support have complex issues and are often at multiple disadvantage. The majority of parents we work with grew up in poverty, where abuse, neglect and domestic violence were common features of their childhood. It is this cycle of deprivation we are working to break. Our work with parents enables families to stay together and keeps children out of an overburdened care system. We work with an average of 200 families a year through our assessment centres and through our outreach programmes in the wider community. Our work is client led and tailored to each individual or family we work with, enabling support where it is needed most. We believe everyone has the capacity for change and have seen transformation in the most unlikely places. St Michael’s Fellowship was founded in 1903. Our longevity is testimony to our record of successfully helping people to change their lives.
About This Cause
We offer three services to help support families during challenging times: • Residential Family Assessment: Our highly supported residential programme works with families over a fixed-term residency at one of three home from home centres in South London. Participants can be referred to this service from all across the UK, and are often a long way form their family, friends and familiar support networks. We provide a formal assessment which looks at the of suitability of a child staying with the birth family. There are occasions where it is not in the child's best interests to remain, and they are removed from care. Whether or not a family leaves with their child, our Securing Change programme is a follow-on service, supporting mums and dads away from the centres. • Jigsaw is our family contact service, offering a safe, neutral space to work with families to to rebuild relationships. We provide a comfortable, home style environment to help parents who are separated from their children, remain in their children’s lives. We offer supervised access to provide safety for the whole family. With facilities to enjoy everyday family life, playtime, cooking and even bath time is possible. • Outreach: One of largest programme areas is through outreach in the community. We work on a 1:1 basis with both mums and dads, and through peer support at our groups in Lambeth. From cooking, to achieving new found skills through AQA, we are keen to offer valuable life skills which enable everyone to achieve child centred parenting skills, and engage in healthy relationships. We provide open ended long-term support, meeting parents in a place which works for them and working on what is important to them. Our work is client led and tailored to the individual or family. We believe everyone has the capacity for change and have seen transformation in the most unlikely places. Practitioners work painstakingly with parents offering tailored, holistic support in residency and in the community. St Michael’s Fellowship was founded in 1903. Our longevity is testimony to our record of helping young people to successfully change their lives. “I got involved with St Michaels as I have been suffering with depression as my Mum died in May this year. My Health Visitor referred me in the hope that they could offer me support. I had never heard of them before and didn’t know how much of an asset they were going to be in my life. I have been able to ask for support when I needed it. Practical and emotional. It feels like I’ve known Lorraine for a long time she’s so caring she’s always there for me. Definitely it is life changing. I no longer feel alone. My support worker has been reliable and always there for me.” Outreach one-to-one client
