Mission Statement

Brigstowe’s vision is a world in which people living with HIV live long and healthy lives, free from poverty, stigma, prejudice and discrimination. Brigstowe’s mission is to enhance the quality of life for people living with HIV.

About This Cause

Brigstowe are a Bristol-based charity who have been providing support since 1994 to people living with HIV or have been affected by HIV. We aim to enhance the quality of life for people living with or affected by HIV and other long term health conditions. Brigstowe grew out of the ‘Bristol HIV & Housing Group’, which was comprised of representatives from Bristol City Council Social Services HIV Team, the Housing Department, Avon Health, Bristol Churches Housing Association, Bristol Drugs Project and the Aled Richards Trust. We have been working very hard, particularly in recent years, to ensure that the organisation is sustainable amidst funding cuts from local authorities, whilst continuing to provide high quality services to our clients. We are always striving to improve and develop our services to meet the changing needs of people living with HIV. We pride ourselves on treating our clients with respect and dignity and with the highest regard for confidentiality. We work hard to ensure that our services are accessible, person-centred, non-judgemental, professional and of high quality at all times. Our Activities: 1. Help people living with HIV (PLWHIV) and other Long Term Health Conditions (LTHC) increase and maintain their independence through responsive and relevant services. 2. Educate people about HIV and challenge stigma and discrimination. 3. Meet the changing needs of PLWHIV and other LTHC in the West of England. 4. Secure the strength and sustainability of Brigstowe into the future. We offer a number of different services: • Advice & Support- this can be short or long term. Helping with a range of matters from financial matters to housing and employment. Our staff will work closely with the client to develop skills and strategies that will help them live independently. • Migrant & Asylum Service- this specialist service offers individuals with HIV seeking asylum or experiencing immigration issues a safe, confidential space. Providing ongoing emotional support as well as some financial support at times of destitution and hardship. • Positive Voices- This service utilises the voices of HIV positive people to help other positive people for example by providing one-to-one peer support, recently diagnosed workshops and delivering HIV awareness training. • All In- This is a group peer support service, running workshops and social events. This is delivered in partnership with Terrence Higgins Trust. • Campaign, Policy and Awareness Raising¬- This project aims to improve the health and well-being of those living with HIV by working to reduce stigma and discrimination. We work with organisations and businesses to review and amend policies. We use the law and power of social media to drive social change. We support a group of campaign volunteers who actively and regularly engage in community outreach. Some examples of what this project has achieved is working collaboratively with Avon & Somerset Police and North Bristol NHS Trust to amend their policies which were previously discriminating against people living with HIV. We also offer one-to-one peer support specifically for people with Type 2 Diabetes With just over 1200 people living with HIV in Bristol, Brigstowe has a lot support to provide to ensure these people are not left behind.
