Mission Statement
Black Cultural Archives is the only national heritage centre dedicated to collecting, preserving and celebrating the histories of African and Caribbean people in Britain. By supporting BCA, you are helping to embed our stories within the history of Britain, ensuring that our contributions are visible and accessible to everyone. Established in 1981 and situated in its iconic building in Brixton’s Windrush Square since 2014, Black Cultural Archives (BCA) is the only national repository of Black history and culture in the UK. We are a public institution open to everyone. Our unparalleled and growing archive collection offers insight into the history of people of African and Caribbean descent in Britain. Our work recognises the importance of untold stories and providing a platform to encourage enquiry and dialogue. We place people and their historical accounts at the heart of everything we do.
About This Cause
Black Cultural Archives is committed to raising awareness of the presence of Black people in Britain and their many and diverse contributions to British society. Through our archive and exhibitions we aim to help Black people to make sense of their place in British society and to locate their stories in the wider narrative of the history of Britain and in doing so, contribute towards creating a more complete awareness and understanding of Britain's past, present and its future. Through our work, we are determined to continue to provide positive representations of Black people in culture, heritage and education to counter the negative and lack of Black representation in society.
