Mission Statement
Ending poverty through education
About This Cause
We believe in a brighter future, created for, and by, children. A future where the course of a person’s life is not dictated by the circumstances of their birth, and where there is genuine equality of opportunity, regardless of race, or gender, or beliefs. We know that education is key to ending poverty and achieving sustainable, positive change; children can only learn effectively in a safe, secure and loving environment, where both their physical and emotional needs are met. World Villages for Children supports the humanitarian education programmes of the Sisters of Mary. We support the Sisters of Mary (SoM) to run live-in schools for the most deprived boys and girls across the world. Working for over sixty years they have taken care of over 170,000 children in seven countries - the Philippines, Guatemala, Mexico, Brazil, Honduras, and most recently, Tanzania. Alongside a strong academic foundation, the children learn vocational and social skills, but above all they experience the joy of a childhood free from fear. They provide them with food, clothing, healthcare, and safe shelter as well as quality accredited education and vocational training tailored to the skill needs of the local economy. With the chance of an education these children can realise their full potential, secure employment and transform their lives - permanently. The Sisters need to provide over 62,900 meals each day. We focus on providing a top quality education to children who would otherwise have little to no formal schooling, and support them as they leave school to secure a good job. Educating a single child can have a profound effect on their families and communities. Our children are not only able to support their parents and siblings financially, breaking the cycle of poverty that has often persisted for generations, but are also a source of inspiration - showing that a different kind of life is possible. When we educate one child we help whole families and our impact reaches far beyond each of our 20,000 children that we care for every year. We give these children and their families hope for a long lasting and brighter future though education. Working in line with the UN policy of Sustainable Development Goals, the SoM programmes focus on the objectives of ending child poverty, improving health, educational attainment and progress into employment and our work facilitates grass roots change in poverty levels within the local communities. So far over 170,000 children have graduated from the programmes but the impact on poverty relief in the regions is many times this figure and the work leads to systemic change in deprivation levels.
