Mission Statement
Orbis is an international charity that transforms lives by preventing and treating avoidable blindness and visual impairment. We work in countries in Africa, Asia and Latin America training eye care teams, strengthening hospitals, screening for and treating eye diseases and educating local communities about eye health.
About This Cause
How does Orbis help? Every year we send our remarkable volunteer ophthalmologists, anaesthetists, nurses and bio-medical engineers from around the globe to train local eye health professionals and perform sight-saving surgery. Training takes place both onboard the Orbis Flying Eye Hospital - a very unique teaching facility - and in partnership with local hospitals. Since 1982 we have conducted educational programmes in 92 countries and in 2014 trained almost 27,000 medical professionals. Our support doesn’t stop when a programme ends; trainees are able to keep in touch with Orbis volunteers through cyber-sight, an online portal that allows them to seek guidance on cases, make referrals and access online training and resources. We have over 40 long-term projects around the world in India, Bangladesh, Nepal, China, Vietnam, Ethiopia, South Africa, Ghana, Zambia, Cameroon, Peru and Mongolia. Why is training important? By training, Orbis ensures local eye health teams can continue to better manage eye conditions and expand and improve their services themselves. This approach provides lasting and long term benefits. If 100 people are treated during a programme, the skills left behind will ensure that every patient after that will also have access to good quality treatment. What’s the result? Orbis has positively impacted the lives of millions of children, women and men globally and in 2014, conducted 6.1 million medical and optical treatments, including surgeries, increasing access to eye care and glasses, antibiotic distribution and screening. This has enabled millions of people to go back to school or work, reintegrate into their communities and have a future full of possibilities.
