Mission Statement
To provide long-term mental health support to adults across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland, where mental health, social and emotional difficulties cause disruption to daily living.
About This Cause
The Leicester Counselling Centre provides long-term support to adults across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland who are experiencing chronic mental health difficulties that disrupt their daily living. It is one of the only providers of easily accessible and timely long-term support in the area, with an inclusive ethos that does not discriminate on the basis of ability to pay. It therefore supports a diverse range of individuals, often those whom experience further disadvantage, such as unemployment or low-earnings; both factors which we know can exacerbate mental ill health. The Leicester Counselling Centre is professionally run by a staff team of two, who support a large committed volunteer team of 75 counsellors, all experienced and qualified or in their final stages of training towards achieving a formal qualification. This highly regarded and cost-effective resource has been serving the community for nearly 40 years, and has over that time evolved to meet the changing needs of its clients, as well as diminishing alternative mental health services. Today it has a more vital role than ever to play, as NHS mental health services become over burdened and the demand for support continues to grow. The Leicester Counselling Centre is unique in being able to tailor its support to meet individual need and our broad range of counsellors means that we can achieve a good therapeutic fit to ensure that the work is effective. Our long term support also provides opportunity for the work to reach depth, which facilitates tangible and sustainable change that is much more difficult to achieve with short term interventions. Individuals can refer themselves into the Centre and many are signposted by primary and secondary care services, such as GP's and the Community Mental Health Team, including psychiatrists, community psychiatric nurses and psychological well-being workers.
